A great book to have in your Lean health care library

A3 Problem Solving for Health Care is a must have book for any Lean health care library. This book is a wonderful "coach" for someone learning A3 problem solving. The author takes the reader through a step-by-step, common sense approach to using this essential Lean tool. The book is filled with great examples of A3 use in every day health care practice areas.

Author Cindy Jimmerson, an internationally popular leader in Lean health care has, yet again, demonstrated her creative and unique approach to a critical subject that can and will change the future of how health care is delivered. Her straight-forward, entertaining, and practical approach to A3 problem solving is easy to learn and easy to apply in the course of daily work.

In particular, Ms Jimmerson demonstrates how A3 problem solving can be used by any member of the health care team to improve how care is delivered by eliminating waste and focusing on moving all of the work that is done towards IDEAL.

The design of Ms Jimmerson's A3 format, using the left side of the form to establishing understanding of the current condition and the right side to identify a target condition and the ways to achieve that target condition, is easy to use because of its logical, step-by-step approach.

The author has captured the essence of Toyota's most effective process improvement tool-- the A3. If you are a beginner, the book is simple, straightforward, and pragmatic with examples that clarify the concepts. If you are a veteran, the book will serve as a great reminder of everything you should be doing, and will be invaluable as a tool for teaching and coaching. Even though the book is written for healthcare, the truth is, it would be useful for any industry. Like the topic it addresses, the book is lean and waste-free.

Deborah Carlisle Solomon is an infant/toddler educator and speaker. She works with parents, caregivers, early interventionists and other professionals to help them to "see infants with new eyes," and to create relationships with babies and young children based on understanding and respect. She was RIE Executive director from 2006 to 2014 and has addressed national and international infancy and early childhood conferences workshops. The only child rearing book you need!

Deborah Carlisle Solomon's book is a perfectly laid out gift of a more peaceful, loving, nurturing way to raise a child. RIE has enabled me to slow down and really SEE and HEAR my child - to put spaces and pauses in our daily dialogue so I miss less and see more. It has helped relax me as a parent and help our entire family be more present in our daily lives. My daughter learned how to self-soothe in her crib and play by herself because of tips and gentle guidelines from Deborah. My daughter has only recently been speaking in full sentences but I feel we've been fully communicating since we first met...

This is a good book explaining and summarizing the RIE philosophy

This is a good book explaining and summarizing the RIE philosophy, but to be honest I am not sure what makes it much different from Magda Gerber's own wonderful book "Your self-confident baby". "Baby Knows Best" presents the same concepts in a slightly different tone which I found a bit preachy at times (as opposed to Magda's warm and non-judgemental approach). I found the word play in the title "the RIE way" a bit too much, too, as it sort of implies RIE=right. To clarify, I am a long follower of RIE and believe in it wholeheartedly.

How to Relax and Enjoy your Baby

I discovered this book when my daughter was a few weeks old. I had read so many different books at that point and I was incredibely overwhelmed with all the conflicting advice. In an act of desperation I started browsing through Amazon, and luckily this book had just been released so it featured prominently. My first thought was "Baby Knows Best?? Thank God, because I certainly have no idea what I'm doing." From the first chapter I heaved a huge sigh of relief. Everything made sense, all the advice was cohesive and part of a well-developed methodology. The pressure went way down. Observe your baby, don't try to do so much, trust yourself and trust your child. I have a fairly anxious, Type-A personality, so Deborah's advice allowed me to let go a bit, relax, and I started to enjoy my daughter so much more. She is 10 months old now and I still go back to this book for guidance, and it helps me every single time. After vetting so many books this is the only one I now recommend or buy for my expecting friends.

Defintely worth your time

This book is in depth, gives insight you just don't think about unless you come from a legal background, and manages to stay entertaining, despite the fact that some of the required subjects of financial laws aren't the most interesting subjects to breach, Mr. Hoegner, Mr. Brito, and others have done a fine job in becoming the resource that anyone considering a business with a bitcoin dimension must refer to.

Bizarre more than creepy

I am a huge fan of this author. HUGE FAN! This book . . . Hmm . . . it was one of the strangest books I've ever read. I can't say that I have an opinion good or bad about this book. It was just average, but definitely different. The author was going for creepy, but I found it more to be bizarre. Overall, a different read, but okay.

YA historical mystery with paranormal element!

I love Kelley Armstrong. So I knew that I had to read this book. It is part of the Secrets series (a bunch of authors each write a book where there is a secret involved).

The Unquiet Past is a YA historical mystery with paranormal elements (ghosts/visions/psychic elements).

The book is set in 1964, mostly in Montreal and rural Quebec. The narrator is almost 17 year old Tess. She is in orphan trying to uncover the truth about her parentage.

When the book begins Tess is in Hope Ontario. She lives in the Benevolent Home of Necessitous Girls. It burns down.

This book is definitely a mystery. But I am not sure if I would consider it a thriller. There is a mystery to figure out. but only in the last part of the book do things really happen at a faster pace.

Before the halfway point I would also say that there is not much paranormal. But that does have a huge impact on the last half of the book.

There is a fair amount of French in this book (since a bunch of characters speak that language). But everything is translated. And it is mostly just a line or two followed by the translation.

I don't normally like historical books. But truthfully this did not really feel that historical. It was only set in the 60s. So things weren't that different.

The book deals with visions, which I found very interesting. I liked how this helped move the story along.

This book was unusual. it was interesting, but very different from anything the author has previously written. But I enjoyed it.

Rather Disappointing

I'm a serious Kelley Armstrong fan, but this seemed rather a cheat. Tess leaves the orphanage where she was raised in search of answers based on an out-of-service phone number and an address, which turns out to be an abandoned house, apparently a psychiatric hospital or the equivalent. She finds a boy at the address who's able to explain anything psych related, and decides to help her unravel her (not much of a) mystery.

Predictable, hardly any suspense, rather disappointing......

One cold December morning some years back, my husband, Mark, and I were driving to the airport, headed to the West Coast to speak at a medical convention. As we voiced our anticipation of warm weather and the excitement of the big city, Mark dashed into a convenience mart to purchase some last-minute items. He returned with a small brown package in his hand and a shivering elderly lady at his side.

What a contrast they were — Mark in a gray wool pinstriped suit and the stranger clothed in a green polyester coat with two missing buttons and a stain on the front. Her half-frozen toes peeked out from time worn sandals.

As the determined lady struggled into the back seat of the car, she flashed a tender smile my way. "My name's Kathleen," she announced boldly. I understand you folks are headed down Kentucky way.�

Her husband, it turned out, was a patient at a nearby nursing home, and was not expected to survive through the Christmas holidays. The two had married late in life, never had any children, and when their small monthly allotment dwindled, Kathleen often hitched a ride to the nursing home. Like so many Appalachian women of her generation, Kathleen was fiercely independent—a survivor. She usually stayed at the nursing home all day, for even though her husband was in a hopeless coma, the facility was warm, the food was great, and there was a piano in the day room where she could while away the hours and her cares at the keyboard.

As we approached the small, brick convalescent center, I remembered the calling cards in my briefcase. I handed my ivory linen card to Kathleen. �Don't hesitate to call us if we can ever give you a lift to the nursing home," I said. Kathleen smiled, thanked us for the ride, then confronted the unyielding wind, her thin coat blowing wildly.

When we returned home after our trip, baking, buying gifts and an endless array of holiday errands consumed our days. Kathleen called a couple of times to chat, but it wasn't until Christmas that our paths actually crossed again.

�Did you take Kathleen anything for Christmas?" Mark asked late Christmas night. How could I have forgotten?

We scurried about the house gathering some remnants of Christmas for Kathleen. As we approached her tiny frame residence, the porch light was still burning. We rang the doorbell and waited. Soon, Kathleen opened the door and invited us in, saying she just knew we were coming for Christmas.

As we stepped inside the living room, our eyes took I Kathleen's short-sleeved cotton dress, the tattered sofa and chair, and rugs taped around each window to protect her from the harsh weather. A bare bulb dangled from d ceiling wire, scarcely lighting the room.

�This is 'Honey.' She's an alley cat plus a better breed,� Kathleen announced, stroking the animal's soft yellow fur. "And Honey and I have a special present for you." Kathleen picked up a xylophone and methodically plunked out �We Wish You a Merry Christmas" on its rusted, paint-chipped keys. �I found this for a quarter last summer at a rummage sale," she said proudly,� and I've been saving it for just the right occasion.

�Do you have a piano?" Kathleen quizzed. I nodded, feeling uncomfortable about the grand piano in our living room at home and the nice clothes in our closet. Christmas was nearly over, and in my busyness I hadn't even played a Christmas carol. In our pursuit of the things money could buy, it seemed we had overlooked many of the things it couldn't buy.

�Could you... would you go home and play 'Silent Night'? You could hold the telephone next to your piano, and I could celebrate Christmas one more time," Kathleen pleaded. Then she shared with us her dream of finding a piano, preferably an old upright model like she'd played as a child. She had little money, but she had faith that God would send one her way.

After the holidays, I combed the classifieds in hopes of buying a used piano for Kathleen. It became apparent, though, that all the bargains had been snatched up by the area piano dealers. I tried to compensate with other small gifts—a pretty blouse, an African violet, a tin of talcum powder.

On Valentine's Day, Kathleen hardly noticed the chocolates I bought her. �My piano will be here soon� she insisted. And, throughout the winter, Kathleen's faith intensified. Her strong faith in the midst of poverty was an unsettling paradox; it amazed me, yet amused me.

But later that spring, something wonderful happened, and Mark and I dropped by to tell Kathleen about it. Some family members had sold their home and were moving. The new owner's sole request was that the heavy upright piano in the basement be removed from the premises. Soon.

�Can you think of anyone who could use that old relic?" they had asked. It's theirs if they move it." Could we ever!

Kathleen ran to meet us when she spotted our car. �My piano... it's coming...I had a dream last night. It's coming from a little town I've never heard of near Point Pleasant, West Virginia," she squealed.

�God�s not too far off� Mark mumbled, maintaining a reserved amazement for God's handiwork. The piano was indeed located in a tiny, postage-stamp-sized town only thirty miles from Point Pleasant.

Mark and I could hardly contain our joy. Kathleen was baffled—not that a piano was coming, but that we were surprised. For she had been joyfully expectant since Christmas night, when she put her faith into action. �I've been playing my piano already in my mind," she explained. �Without faith, we can't please God, you know.�

And ever since the massive, oak upright was rolled into Kathleen's living room, music hasn't stopped flowing. Artistic expression hasn't been limited by her advancing age or glaucoma. Kathleen's husband has since passed away. But music—be it the classics, roaring-twenties tunes or gospel songs recalled from childhood tent meetings-connects Kathleen with the world. She accompanies the congregation at her neighborhood church and joined a senior citizens' band. Kathleen doesn't read music, but she beautifully reproduces what she hears.

Before I met Kathleen, I understood faith in my mind; now I understand it in my heart. For as with all acts of faith, Kathleen's miracle happened not when she received, but the moment she first believed.

Watery Chicken Soup

Got this based on reviews. First time I've been snookered on that basis. I'm sixty-something and found this book sappy, couldn't last past 3 stories. Guess I don't fit the "profile." I do, however, remember one review referring to it as sappy (the only negative one), and now I find that review missing. Is this a way Amazon pushes book sales? By upping review averages? Gave this two stars instead of one because based on the title I should have had a tipoff as to the mishmosh inside. Follow your gut instinct.

Nice collection of stories

I bought this book to read to my 85 year old mother who can no longer read. I am 57. I found that many of the stories contained here are suitable for my adult children and grandchildren. It is a nice collection of stories.

About the Author
Larry Gaines is chair of his department and a longtime, well-known figure in the field, both as an educator and in law enforcement. Highly respected and well-liked in the discipline, he is also a former law enforcement officer whose experience has resulted in a book with powerful "cop appeal."

Roger LeRoy Miller, Ph.D. has served on the faculty of several universities, including the University of Washington, Clemson University, and the University of Miami School of Law. As a professor, he has taught intellectual property law and entertainment law, among other subjects. A widely published and respected author, his work has appeared in the Insurance Counsel Journal, Defense Research, California Trial Lawyers Journal, Antitrust Bulletin, Wisconsin Law Review, and Connecticut Law Review. He has authored or co-authored numerous authoritative textbooks on law, including BUSINESS LAW: TEXT & CASES; BUSINESS LAW TODAY: TEXT & SUMMARIZED CASES; and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT TODAY. Professor Miller completed his studies at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Chicago.

Pretty Cool Textbook

Bought this book for a criminal justice class. Overall, it's a pretty good book. What I like about it the most is its ability to spark discussion over topics mentioned in the book. It's even okay just to read. The layout is eye catching and even entertaining. It's not boring. It covers all kinds of different issues such as profiling, psychological disorders, family problems, and much more. I really liked this book, but I wouldn't have bought it if i didn't have to. Most of the information this book offers is available basically everywhere on the internet, etc. Not bad.

Designed by "#millennial" women, inspiring for anyone

I don't think someone from my generation would have the imagination to design a book this way, or to include a photo feature about a Supreme Court Justice's "swag." But fundamentally this is a wonderful book about the difference an individual can make. The book's breezy style has a deeper and more serious significance, as well.

I was touched by many things in this book, not only the courage of Justice Ginsburg's opinions, or the loving handwritten note from her dying husband, but even by the photos illustrating her close friendship with Justice Scalia, one of her ideological opposites - it's rare to see such a mensh in these times. The format is terrifically creative for this sort of subject: the NY Times reviewer aptly described it as being "as if a scrapbook and the Talmud decided to have a baby." The latter comes in especially for the way the book's margins are used for commenting on everything -- not just for the obvious connections to a Justice who is Jewish. (Apropos of that, though, one thing did puzzle me: the recipe for pork in milk at the back. Breaking two of the Jewish religion's food taboos at once -- isn't that a little gangsta? Was that the idea, or is the whole thing a joke? And actually, one other thing: the publisher's subject classification on the back cover is "Fiction." Aside from the recipe, I hope not.)

I now live in Japan and teach comparative constitutional law there. Pretty much no one, including most law professors, can name the justices of the Japan Supreme Court, who are chosen for their anonymity, their conformity to a certain social background, and their timidity of thought. And throughout its nearly 70-year existence, the JSC has always upheld laws and regulations that limit civil rights. One reason I got this book was to be able to show my students how completely different the relationship between a country's Supreme Court and its citizens can be. In most countries of the world, a book like this would be inconceivable. While I'm not saying that many other Justices deserve such a tribute, this book should be a great reminder for Americans how lucky you are not only to have Justice Ginsburg, but also to be capable of such affectionate engagement with your government.

Fantastic portrait of a warrior for justice.

This is a remarkable portrait of a warrior for human rights, equal rights and human dignity.

Justice Ginsburg is proof you don't have to be tall to be a giant. When we look back I believe her appointment
to the Court by Bill Clinton will be seen as one of his greatest accomplishments.

If you want to find out what the Court is up to in any given decision, read Justice Ginsburg.

Don't be fooled by the calm quiet demeanor. She is a ferocious advocate for the best that is in us as a people
and a country.

I could not put this book down. The authors should be very proud of this fabulous book.

If you go to "righteous" in the dictionary , you will find Justice Ginsburg's picture.

Give this book to your sons and daughters this holiday season. You will be glad you did.

If I could give more than five stars I would. Ten would not be enough.

~~'A Little Chutzpah Goes a Long Way'~~

This is an incredible glimpse into the life of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her mother told her that 'getting angry was a waste of your own time' and she carried that wisdom with her to the Supreme Court. Everything in her life has been done to the best of her ability and that includes her workout ethics (which are still ongoing). Just imagine giving up waterskiing in your late 70's!

A fascinating read which includes her educational background as well as her early work with the ACLU. Some of her Women's Rights Projects are detailed and one that caught my attention was the AF Nurse case in 1970. CAPT Strich was pregnant and refused to quit or get an abortion. Pregnant women were also given a general discharge instead of an honorable one. The book also delves into her time on the Supreme Court and covers that portion in depth including the influence of social media.

Many things struck me when reading this book. She referred to her marriage to Marty as her 'life partner'. It was an incredibly rich marriage for all of the right reasons and the note he left for her on June 17, 2010 was powerful and poignant. The second item that really caught my attention was the manner in which she values the work of her secretaries. Any of her clerks must value them as she does or they will answer to her. This is a true 'people person'. The tradition that occurs in the robing room and the look around her chambers are treasured glimpses into both areas.

At some point in the future, I will make RBG's favorite Marty Ginsburg's Recipe for pork loin braised in milk. Sounds delicious to me.

'Notorious RBG' illustrates that a little chutzpah goes a long way. An entertaining and educational read which gave me more information on the inner workings of our Supreme Court..
