Gr 7 Up—In 1964, a girls' orphanage burns to the ground and its seven oldest residents, each armed with a cryptic clue about her past, are sent out into the world to make their way. Each entry in the "Secrets" series of seven linked YA novels details a different girl's rocky start. In Walters's Innocent, Lizzy is offered a job in her hometown, where she discovers that her father, having murdered her mother, is still doing time in the local prison. Drawn to him despite warnings from her seemingly kind employer, the protagonist discovers a cover-up involving nearly the entire town. Although it gets off to a slow start, this volume delivers some tense moments as Lizzy makes her way through the local web of lies. Armstrong's The Unquiet Past features a creepy supernatural element. Tess's search for the meaning of her waking visions leads her to an abandoned mental hospital, a series of illegal experiments, and a boy who's looking for answers of his own. These installments target reluctant readers with their short sentences, plot-driven events, and light character development. VERDICT Purchase where historical fiction is popular.—Elizabeth Friend, Wester Middle School, TX
Review
"The realistic landscape of racist microagressions that plague Mtis Jackson is heartbreakingly matter-of-fact. A compelling mystery." (Kirkus Reviews 2015-07-15)
"Tess’s spunk, determination, and sense of adventure will turn readers into allies immediately. It’s hard not to root for someone who has nothing and is ready to pursue any possible clue at all costs...Armstrong does an excellent job navigating difficult issues, including racism and mental illness...A compelling story that’s difficult to put down." (CM Magazine 2015-09-04)
"Part of a series of seven linked but independent novels, The Unquiet Past can stand on its own as intended but will likely entice readers to seek out the rest of the series. This fast-paced paranormal thriller will appeal to fans of Caroline B. Cooney and Lois Duncan. Tess is inexperienced and nave, but despite her secret visions and fear that she is going crazy, she is a strong, independent young woman who learns from her mistakes. The story is grounded in time and place, with just enough historical details on Metis, French-language rights, and psychological research to enhance the story." (VOYA 2015-10-01)
"Features a creepy supernatural element. Tess’s search for the meaning of her waking visions leads her to an abandoned mental hospital, a series of illegal experiments, and a boy who’s looking for answers of his own." (School Library Journal 2015-10-01)
"This would make a great read aloud as it would stimulate discussions and questions around mental health and medical ethics. Learning a little about the past in this historical fiction may help students understand the need for effective well-being initiatives today." (Ms. J's Book Reviews 4 School Libraries blog 2015-09-28)
"Readers will find the mystery of what was going on at the abandoned house both intriguing and scary. That Tess and Jackson operate so independently will appeal to the age group, too. Bonus points to Armstrong for highlighting the history of mental illness in Canada and Campbell’s despicable treatment of depressed women. Settings of small-town Hope, the restrictive orphanage, the spooky mansion that holds so many scary possibilities and the McGill campus will hold readers’ interest and inspire them to reach for the other books in the series." Bizarre more than creepy
By Andrea Heltsley
I am a huge fan of this author. HUGE FAN! This book . . . Hmm . . . it was one of the strangest books I've ever read. I can't say that I have an opinion good or bad about this book. It was just average, but definitely different. The author was going for creepy, but I found it more to be bizarre. Overall, a different read, but okay.

YA historical mystery with paranormal element!
By Jennifer
3.5/5 stars
I love Kelley Armstrong. So I knew that I had to read this book. It is part of the Secrets series (a bunch of authors each write a book where there is a secret involved).
The Unquiet Past is a YA historical mystery with paranormal elements (ghosts/visions/psychic elements).
The book is set in 1964, mostly in Montreal and rural Quebec. The narrator is almost 17 year old Tess. She is in orphan trying to uncover the truth about her parentage.
When the book begins Tess is in Hope Ontario. She lives in the Benevolent Home of Necessitous Girls. It burns down.
This book is definitely a mystery. But I am not sure if I would consider it a thriller. There is a mystery to figure out. but only in the last part of the book do things really happen at a faster pace.
Before the halfway point I would also say that there is not much paranormal. But that does have a huge impact on the last half of the book.
There is a fair amount of French in this book (since a bunch of characters speak that language). But everything is translated. And it is mostly just a line or two followed by the translation.
I don't normally like historical books. But truthfully this did not really feel that historical. It was only set in the 60s. So things weren't that different.
The book deals with visions, which I found very interesting. I liked how this helped move the story along.
This book was unusual. it was interesting, but very different from anything the author has previously written. But I enjoyed it.

Rather Disappointing
By Pamela M. Emanuel
I'm a serious Kelley Armstrong fan, but this seemed rather a cheat. Tess leaves the orphanage where she was raised in search of answers based on an out-of-service phone number and an address, which turns out to be an abandoned house, apparently a psychiatric hospital or the equivalent. She finds a boy at the address who's able to explain anything psych related, and decides to help her unravel her (not much of a) mystery.
Predictable, hardly any suspense, rather disappointing......
