Raise self-confident, self-reliant children using the RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) Approach.
Your baby knows more than you think. That's the heart of the principles and teachings of Magda Gerber, founder of RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers), and Educaring. BABY KNOWS BEST is based on Gerber's belief in babies' natural abilities to develop at their own pace, without coaxing from helicoptering or hovering parents. The Educaring Approach helps parents see their infants as competent people with a growing ability to communicate, problem-solve, and self-soothe.
BABY KNOWS BEST is a comprehensive resource that shows parents how to respond to their babies' cues and signals; how to develop healthy sleep habits; why babies need uninterrupted playtime; and how to set clear, consistent limits. The result? More relaxed parents and more confident, self-reliant children.

Review
"One of the best things that ever happened to me as a mother was discovering RIE. I'm forever indebted to Deborah Solomon and my other RIE teachers for helping me slow down, understand and respect my baby. Even though my daughter is now nine, she is still a RIE baby at heart: calm, confident and self-motivated. Baby Knows Best is a treasure of insights and wisdom. I will be giving this invaluable book to every new mother I know." --Maria Semple, author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette
"The RIE program is the single most relatable, intuitive, and common sense approach to the modern day conundrum of parenting. Baby Knows Best is the guide book. It helps you get back to basics and makes you a better, more confident parent as you learn that Babies do indeed Know Best. A must-have." --Jamie Lee Curtis
"I think RIE should be a national program so that parents all over the country can have the opportunity that my family had." --Dee Dee Myers, former White House Press Secretary
"This terrific book is written by someone who really understands daily life with a baby. Deborah Carlisle Solomon shows how you can build an enjoyable relationship with your baby through the power of observation."--Sue Gerhardt, author of Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby's Brain
"Outstanding! Absorbing and powerful. Deborah Solomon's experiences augment Magda Gerber's teachings and expand our thinking about who babies are and what they need. This book is loaded with potent new ideas--ideas that in some ways are quite different from the usual advice experts give parents. Easy to read, eye-opening, hard to forget!" --Janet Gonzalez-Mena, co-author of Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers and author of Diversity in Early Care and Education: Honoring Differences
"An invaluable contribution for parents and for anybody who cares about young children. RIE offers a gentle, supportive approach that fosters your self-confidence and helps you rediscover the joys of raising a child. A refreshing departure from the didactic, overly prescriptive books that seem to dominate the parenting literature. I strongly recommend it." --Alicia Lieberman, PhD, author of The Emotional Life of the Toddler
"RIE gave us a loving methodology for how to do the most important thing in the world--understand and nurture our babies. It fostered a communication and interplay that we've built upon all their lives. This was invaluable and loving knowledge." --Jason Alexander, actor
"How to be attentive but not intrusive, loving but not smothering, kind but not indulging, guiding but not controlling, strict but not rigid--all this is wonderfully laid out in RIE's Educaring Approach. We are raising an independent being that I can feel incredibly close to. Thank you Magda Gerber and all the wonderful infant educarers!" --Hank Azaria, actor
"RIE has been a blessing in our lives, giving us the chance to learn that our baby can teach us best when we observe carefully. We've learned to respect him as he expresses his needs." --Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and his wife Elosa Maturn
"A quietly brilliant parenting book, full of wisdom and calm guidance."--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

The only child rearing book you need!
By Fielding Edlow
Deborah Carlisle Solomon's book is a perfectly laid out gift of a more peaceful, loving, nurturing way to raise a child. RIE has enabled me to slow down and really SEE and HEAR my child - to put spaces and pauses in our daily dialogue so I miss less and see more. It has helped relax me as a parent and help our entire family be more present in our daily lives. My daughter learned how to self-soothe in her crib and play by herself because of tips and gentle guidelines from Deborah. My daughter has only recently been speaking in full sentences but I feel we've been fully communicating since we first met...

This is a good book explaining and summarizing the RIE philosophy
By Anya
This is a good book explaining and summarizing the RIE philosophy, but to be honest I am not sure what makes it much different from Magda Gerber's own wonderful book "Your self-confident baby". "Baby Knows Best" presents the same concepts in a slightly different tone which I found a bit preachy at times (as opposed to Magda's warm and non-judgemental approach). I found the word play in the title "the RIE way" a bit too much, too, as it sort of implies RIE=right. To clarify, I am a long follower of RIE and believe in it wholeheartedly.

How to Relax and Enjoy your Baby
By Elisa Schwartz
I discovered this book when my daughter was a few weeks old. I had read so many different books at that point and I was incredibely overwhelmed with all the conflicting advice. In an act of desperation I started browsing through Amazon, and luckily this book had just been released so it featured prominently. My first thought was "Baby Knows Best?? Thank God, because I certainly have no idea what I'm doing." From the first chapter I heaved a huge sigh of relief. Everything made sense, all the advice was cohesive and part of a well-developed methodology. The pressure went way down. Observe your baby, don't try to do so much, trust yourself and trust your child. I have a fairly anxious, Type-A personality, so Deborah's advice allowed me to let go a bit, relax, and I started to enjoy my daughter so much more. She is 10 months old now and I still go back to this book for guidance, and it helps me every single time. After vetting so many books this is the only one I now recommend or buy for my expecting friends.
