Critics were enthralled by Donoghue's latest novel, inspired by the Josef Fritz case, in which an Austrian man locked his daughter in the basement for 24 years. Describing it as gripping, claustrophobic, and "fantastically evocative" (Washington Post), they also predicted that Room, recently short-listed for the Booker Prize, would appeal to a much larger audience than the author's previous fiction. On the other hand, several reviewers noted that Jack's understated anxiety in the book's second half didn't quite ring true, but they also acknowledged that the critique was "based on the very high standards set by the beauty of the book" (New York Times Book Review). As a thriller of sorts and a love story, Donoghue's novel is a stunning achievement. Or, as one critic put it, "Such a story, such a mother" (Entertainment Weekly).

Gripping

The story is told by Jack, a very intelligent, articulate five year old boy. Raised by his mother, who was kidnapped at nineteen, imprisoned in a small metal garden shed that had been made escape proof. She is at the mercy of her jailer for even the bare essentials of survival. She gives birth to Jack frightened and alone. Jack gives Ma, as he comes to call her, a reason to live, somebody to love. Their relationship is the heart of the story. An awesome story of a Mother's love for her son. Jack grows believing the room is all there is. Beyond the room is outer space. When the man comes at night Jack retreats to the wardrobe, he always wakes up in his and Ma's bed in the morning. Besides the bed and the wardrobe there is a toilet, bathtub, sink, refrigerator, stove, cupboard, a small TV with rabbit ears and poor picture, a small table and two chairs. The only door, a steel security door operated by a touch pad, the only window, a sky-light in the roof. There is no privacy, no escape. Each day when Ma believes the man is gone from the area they stand on the table screaming, hoping someone will hear. Each night Ma slips out of bed and using the light switch sends an SOS hoping maybe someone will see the light blinking through the sky-light and rescue them. When the man turns off the electricity leaving them without heat, lights or food to punish Ma, Jack's tiny world becomes even more frightening. A novel I couldn't put down.

Go hug your children folks and be thankful for the safety of the “Room” you choose!

“Room” is a book about a 19-year-old woman who was kidnapped outside of her college campus. She was held captive for 7 years in a small highly secure one room shed on the kidnapper’s property. 2 years in she gave birth alone to a little boy she named Jack. The book is about their survival in “Room” and healing thereafter told in the voice of 5-year-old Jack.
I wouldn't consider what I have included as "spoilers" but reader be advised.
I don’t think “Room” is a book anyone in their right mind can say that they “loved”. It was beautifully written and extremely real feeling. That being said, it was very painful for me to read. I had to take breaks from it for a few days just to leave their world. Having two sons with Autism and reading Jack’s thoughts on what he calls, “Outside” felt very much like what I imagine my children feel and think at times. The interactions between Jack, his mother, and new people were reminiscent to our experiences with others who are not familiar with our children. The rushing, the pushing, the impatience, and the frustration towards this child who is always focused on making the “correct” decisions while trying to experience the world and please people.
I loved Ma in Room. She was everything we can hope to be as parents. Her perseverance and undying love for her son that was born of a horrible series of events is just beautiful. The ways she tried to give him answers to every possible question, which if you have ever spent time with a 4-5-year-old... it can be intense to say the least. The creative ways she educated him, kept him happy, and playful was amazing. Ma outside of Room was very raw and real. I could see myself making most of her choices be them mistakes or not. As the reader, we can always say we would have done better. I'm not sure I would have given the circumstances.
After reflecting on the novel, maybe I did love it. Maybe I’m “not in my right mind” having been so emotionally affected by this stunning portrayal of the base lines that make us parents and people. It is certainly something everyone should read. It will change the way you look at your core human interactions and the world at large. Go hug your children folks and be thankful for the safety of the “Room” you choose.

Great book!!

This is a great book but can be sad at times. The movie is getting ready to come out in theaters and my daughter has been telling me to read this book for years. I laughed, I cried, I got mad and scared. This book is not for the faint of heart and not for everyone but I loved it.
