I'm delighted to be able to get german versions of popular Y/A fiction ...

I'm delighted to be able to get copies of popular fiction in German language books (both hard copy and Kindle versions). I saw Divergent with my 13 year old daughter, who had already read the trilogy in English, and despite my disinclination to see a film about a dystopian world it, I enjoyed the movie and came out of the theater with the desire to read the books. My daughter and I are both students of the German language, so I opted for the German version of this book - in part for myself, but also as an excuse to exercise my daughter's German.
My daughter and I sit together several times a week and she reads a couple of pages out loud a sentence or two at a time with my daughter translating what she just read in her own words. Her previous knowledge of the material makes the work easier for her and I enjoy revisiting the story in the process. I have both hard cover and Kindle versions of the Divergent Series as well as the Bestimmung series, so while my daughter is reading from her hard copy of Divergent, I can follow along on my Kindle and easily toggle back and forth between versions to check the quality of her translation effort. This is great father/daughter time and productive to boot...
Die Bestimmung is not a 100% word for word translation of Divergent. I find it interesting that the translator of the book quite often substitutes English colloquialisms for German ones and at times rewrites whole sentences with a slightly different meaning. This makes it more interesting and fun to compare the versions. When I read the series the first time, I didn't shuffle back and forth between languages, so I didn't discover this until I started working on the books with my daughter. Now I'm rereading both side by side myself just to enjoy the differences.
If you've never heard of Divergent or Die Bestimmung and want a review of the story line itself, I suggest you read other reviews here or at Amazon.de for that. I'll simply say that these are popular young adult fare - think Harry Potter and Hunger Games, and you enjoy dystopian novels, you'll find the story engaging. I like this issue the best and the third book of the trilogy the least - for my money the ending wasn't very satisfying. My daughter describes the ending as bitter sweet.
Lastly, since I read the German books first, I prefer the German names of the factions over the English versions. Ferox seems a more fitting name than Dauntless for example.

Great Book with Some Questionable Translator Choices

I teach English as a Second Language, and when my students are reading a novel in English, I like to mimic their experience by reading the same book in my second language, German. I really enjoyed "Die Bestimmung"--even more than reading it in English last year. I thought it was a really good translation, and since German isn't my first language, I was probably paying closer attention than I did in English. Highly recommended! Unlike a previous reviewer, however, I question changing the names of factions. Altruan--Altruistic--has an entirely different meaning and feeling than Abnegation. Why not call Dauntless "Furchtlos" instead of Fierce or Ferocious, which have different meanings again? That would be my only criticism. Makes the book have a different feeling for those who only read German.

Don't even bother (spoiler alert!)

In clear plagiarism of Hogwart's houses, Roth creates cheap copies and calls them factions. Do you remember Bella from Twilight and how you wanted to kill her slowly by hitting her repeatedly with a spoon? Well poor Beatrice has inherited her abhorrent personality. Okay okay this book is way better than Twilight but there’s something about this winy b...girl that makes you want to throw her into an abyss.
And don’t even get me started on this dystopian Chicago. Apparently there are trains running continuously with no apparent destination. I thought the resources were scarce. But no they just magically keep on coming, even after a civil war. Let me get this straight... Is all this infrastructure just so one faction can hop-on hop-off? And there are only 10 spots per year in this one faction? That means that for a city the size of Chicago there are only 50-60 people born per year? Yet they are still able to produce state-of-the-art solar-paneled electric cars?
Nope, I don’t buy it, sorry. This dystopian installment is simply not convincing.
This packed-with-action read is however enjoyable… if you manage to filter out all inconsistencies, taints of religious fanaticism, a PMSing teenager and the attempt to call ‘Dauntless’ what is -and should remain to be called- Gryffindor.
