Good, with a few shortcomings

The way this book is organized is helpful in cognitively categorizing the organisms-- not all micro books do this. For example, bacteria are organized into sections on Gram positive cocci, Gram positive rods, Gram negative rods, etc. There is a lot of general information on the characteristics of the biochemical tests used in the lab, and there are nice biochemical test charts for some of the groups of organisms, especially the Enterobacteriaceae. The problem is that there is not consistency, as some of the other groups are lacking this information-- you get bits and pieces of information about the biochemical reactions for the Gram positives, for example. While the Gram positives are generally simpler to identify, in our class there was an (unspoken) expectation that we know the battery of biochemical reactions that were not necessarily in the book.
The fungi section needs a lot of work, I think. This book does not provide a discussion of the key basic features used to identify the different fungi (i.e., conidial and hyphael structural characteristics, etc.). A picture chart, such as provided in other books I have seen, would have been nice.
Overall, more and/or better pictures of everything would be nice, as so much of micro depends on visual interpretation. Sometimes things are described in the text, but there is no way for the beginner to really translate that description into reality without some examples to look at.
I would suggest using this book along with some supplemental visual aids to get a more complete understanding of microorganisms.

I found the text well organized with a decent index. Pearson did such a great job with Microbiology an Introduction (Tortora, Funke, Case) with the web support, audio file downloads, and quiz app, that this text and it's web support seemed weak. But considering other clinical texts, Clinical Laboratory Micro was solid and gave me all I needed to do well in my class.

Great textbook!

This is a fantastic textbook for health professionals, particularly for medical laboratory students and professionals. It contains great, in-depth coverage of specimen collection, specimen processing, and bacteriology. It also contains good coverage of medical mycology, parasitology, and virology. Med students might need more in-depth texts covering those last three subjects but this would still be a great overview or review of all subjects concerned.
