The WIcked + The Divine

Every ninety years, 12 gods are reincarnated, living on earth for two years before dying and beginning the cycle again. They are brought back as beautiful pop/rock stars and enjoy the adoration of the masses, however along with those that love them there are plenty of people who hate and fear them and wish to destroy what they are. After a failed assassination attempt that sees Luci (AKA Lucifer) kill two gunmen, she is framed when someone kills the judge presiding over her case. It is up to fangirl and wannabe goddess, Laura, to help Luci and try to solve who set her up.

When I started this read I wasn't overly sold on the story, I got a bit confused with the gods and mythology but as the book continued it really drew me in. The premise is interesting and even 5 issues in, the mythology is only lightly touched upon leaving plenty of back story that could be explored in future volumes.

The artwork is amazing, clean and using beautiful bold colouring in the panels, some of which remind me a little of Lichtenstein's work. The book itself is about 180 pages but the story finishes at 144, the rest of it is more stunning artwork, a perfect end to the volume. I'm hoping that Volume 2 will be just as good.

So.......I think I liked this. I'll elaborate. The art by Jamie McKelvie is amazing! Every panel was phenomenal and if there were no words, I still would read the book. Now, on to the story. Kieron Gillen writes a mystery, comedy, action tale that was quite possibly over my head. I was left scratching my head multiple times and had to reread pages to make sure I knew what was happening. That being said, I think I got it. That unknowing though was tough to handle. Overall, it left me asking questions, which isn't bad but I'm not sure I feel like I need to know the answer, which is bad.

I really liked “The Wicked and The Divine, Vol. 1.” The artwork is so beautiful. The story line is pretty fun too. I was drawn into the story because of the artwork. I was fascinated by how beautiful the pictures are. The story is pretty interesting, that these gods get reincarnated every two years as teenagers. The are pretty much rock-stars and then they die. While they are reincarnated, they basically cause a ton of mischief. Now one of the gods is being framed for murder, so a mortal girl is trying to figure out what really happened. The biggest plus of these graphic novels is the artwork.

Good coverage, but difficult to use for out-of-order reading or as a reference

I am using this textbook for a Masters-level course in network communications.

This book covers each topic quite well, but I found it difficult to use for out-of-order reading. Particularly when using algebraic notation, the meanings of the variables are not defined in each and every example, meaning that you have to manually go back through the book to find out where in the book the values were first defined. For this reason, where mathematical formulas are involved (which is quite often), it's difficult to locate a topic and read up just on that topic without a lot of frustration. It would be much easier to use if the variable definitions were repeated in each example.

So, perhaps it is good for a cover-to-cover read for someone who is able to take in and understand information thoroughly on the first pass, but it's not good as a reference book or for people who follow a different method of learning.

Mandatory Reading for Anyone studying Network Communications

Over 10 years ago, Dr. Leon-Garcia wrote the epitimal tome on computer networks, and it is still mandatory reading at the graduate level. The material within is starting to show its age. Most of it's very historical, what the modern comm systems are based on. If he ever writes a next edition, I hope he adds something about modern wifi.

Epitome of Strong Black Woman

The quality of biographies and autobiographies is largely dependent upon the life lived by the individual and how the story is told. Someone could have lived a full and exciting life but tell about it in a drab, dull way. Whereas someone could have lived a mundane, boring life but narrated it in a colorful and interesting way.

Assata lived a very interesting life, much different than the majority of us, and she told her story in an uncomplicated and intriguing manner. I had never heard of Assata Shakur until I saw her named mentioned in another book I was reading. Now I'm quite upset that I didn't know about her sooner or that I hadn't read her story when I was younger.

Assata's simple yet powerful story of her life in New York as a young woman searching for a way to best serve her people is amazing. I absolutely love her toughness, her mindset and her ability to think for herself. Although she joined the Black Panther Party she was not hesitant to point out its flaws and what they needed to do to improve. She took a critical thinking approach to everything she did though her actions weren't completely devoid of emotion.

What happened to her as an adult is eerily similar to what happened to so many other freedom fighters/Black activists in the 60's and 70's: they were either killed or imprisoned. Fortunately, she wasn't killed though it wasn't for lack of trying. That night of May 2, 1973 had death sentence written all over it. But she survived and fought one legal battle after the next until the system finally succeeded in putting her away. It was a matter of: "we have the resources and the means and you do not."

Assata was an amazing woman and it literally radiates from the pages. And she tells her story in a straightforward way. She's not trying to exhibit how much she knows or even how much she's done. It is not a verbose book with $10 words in there to wow the reader. It is a simple no-nonsense telling of what her life was like in the Black urban areas of New York as a child, how she became the pro-Black woman she became and how a system of institutionalized racism ran her over with their 20 ton train.

She conspicuously and wisely omits a lot of names and details when it comes to some of her movements and meetings during her Panther days and, of course, of her escape from prison. Still, you learn all you need to know about Assata and the powers that she was up against. But she named herself Assata Olugbala Shakur for a reason:

"Assata means 'She who struggles,' Olugbala means 'Love for the people,' ...Shakur means 'the thankful.'" I would say that she embodied all of that and I'M thankful she lived the life she lived, told the story she told and I'm thankful I got a chance to read and appreciate it.

What I really loved about this book was Assata's ability to "flashback" into ...

Let me start by saying that after I read this book, it was in my top 3 books of all time. What I really loved about this book was Assata's ability to "flashback" into her childhood and still talk about her adult years without confusing the reader. The transitions flowed so perfectly. To be honest, I got this book after doing some research on her and I wanted to see what exactly the government did to desecrate her character. She enlightened me on so many false truths, the power of the media and how they can put out misleading information, and even the pros and cons of the Black Panther Party. I really wanted her to speak on her escape but given her political asylum and other variables I can also see why she didn't. She felt a love for Blacks and minorities that many people cannot say they did. Assata speaks her naked truth; you will be mad, sad, hurt, happy, and you may even laugh. After reading this, I felt like I knew her personally and because I don't - I want to meet her. She went through so much and made it an effort to tell a story. I admire her fearlessness. Definitely a must read. I love you Assata Shakur..

This is the best book I've read in a long time

This is the best book I've read in a long time. Before reading I knew a small amount about Assata Shakur, but reading this allowed me to empathize so much with both her as a person and with all revolutionaries in the 60s. As a non-black person born in the 90s, it is difficult for me to know where to look to understand what that time was like, and this book does an incredible job of expressing that. The book covers Assata's childhood and her criminal trials. You can hear how compassionate and intelligent she is, and how incredibly optimistic she is despite so many terrifying experiences. This book is a great documentation of a truly incredible person.

Great book, just what I was looking for to get started using html5 and iOS. I had a question for the author "Scott Preston" who gave fast feedback and support. Book format is easy to follow and well written with clear to understand examples. I would recommend book to anyone who has an interest in seeing their web pages displayed on a iPhone, iPad or iPod using html5 and JavaScript.
