Petronius (C. or T. Petronius Arbiter), who is reasonably identified with the author of this famous satyric and satiric novel, was a man of pleasure and of good literary taste who flourished in the times of Claudius (41–54 CE) and Nero (54–68). As Tacitus describes him, he used to sleep by day, and attend to official duties or to his amusements by night. At one time he was governor of the province of Bithynia in Asia Minor and was also a consul, showing himself a man of vigour when this was required. Later he lapsed into indulgence (or assumed the mask of vice) and became a close friend of Nero. Accused by jealous Tigellinus of disloyalty and condemned, with self-opened veins he conversed lightly with friends, dined, drowsed, sent to Nero a survey of Nero's sexual deeds, and so died, 66 CE.

The surviving parts of Petronius's romance Satyricon mix philosophy and real life, prose and verse, in a tale of the disreputable adventures of Encolpius and two companions, Ascyltus and Giton. In the course of their wanderings they attend a showy and wildly extravagant dinner given by a rich freedman, Trimalchio, whose guests talk about themselves and life in general. Other incidents are a shipwreck and somewhat lurid proceedings in South Italy. The work is written partly in pure Latin, but sometimes purposely in a more vulgar style. It parodies and otherwise attacks bad taste in literature, pedantry and hollow society.

Apocolocyntosis, "Pumpkinification" (instead of deification), is probably by Seneca the wealthy philosopher and courtier (ca. 4 BCE–65 CE). It is a medley of prose and verse and a political satire on the Emperor Claudius written soon after he died in 54 CE and was deified.

Welcome! Gaius Petronius Arbiter. It was not for naught! Thank you!

There is something we would say to ourselves had we time and patience, but neither congregation here hold this morning. Yet would a signal fire send up to readers to notice this poor old Roman who like many of his contemporaries and those of other times, places, were lost/found afloat the terrors and inhumanity of Their time.

With squint intrepid then, having taken him up - Gaius Petronius Arbiter - (Seneca perhaps later) with his, I think, unfortunate secondary position in the Latin cannon (whatever the reason(s), perhaps including his sharing of more than time, locale and circumstance with Lucan), with some overlook of the sexual mores of the time, I have found his full-story prosaic novel part-inventing poetic sense and strain of the highest order.

Content, what one has to say as writer, Is King! And sorry the shocks of sexuality above alluded to, this is a superb read and gather of intelligence,
which many, at least, in fact read for.

I found him (to repeat) intelligent, forward looking in his helps of mankind, and as honest as history and the scholia have been able to hand down to us. And so, Highly Recommended is the writer/poet Gaius Petronius Arbiter, who even now, is as many a great worker, enlightening, relevant and visionary.

The lessons, sorry to say, are the same. Will man ever pay his so little attention and learn?

Defective copy

This is a wonderful edition and one of my favorite publishers, but there are pages that did not print and are blank--for example pp. 116-17, 120-21, 124-25, 128-29, 132-33, 136-37, 140-41 and 144-45.

The missing text, of course, disrupts and diminishes the story and the whole reading experience.

If the publisher would replace my defective copy, then the rating would be five stars.

Latin Meneppian Satire

These two puzzling pieces of literature fall into the playful genre of Mennepian satire, a unique method which blends prose, verse, and dialogue. In this genre, modes of interpretation are various and always open-ended; and it is usually the author's purpose to keep it as such. The first text in this volume is Petronius' Satyricon, a Latin novel which closely resembles the later work of Apuleius, The Golden Ass. The stage for the tales in the Satyricon are set in the rural south of Italy. The stories in the Satyricon are bawdy and full of everything that a hedonist of the Neronian period would agree upon. It would be somewhat unnecessary to lay out the plot line since the narrative is often times difficult to follow and the surviving text is fragmentary. Petronius' merit as an author and poet, for the most part, lies in the effect his writings had on the generations to follow. The second work in this volume is the great Seneca's Apocolocyntosis or Pumpkification of the Divine Claudius. This short work is a biting satire--which is quite humorous--aimed at the shamefully deified emperor Claudius. Essentially, it is a work which purports to "undiefy" the insane emperor and send him to Hades where he belongs. Overall, these two works are moderately enjoyable. For the poet or satirist there is a wealth of material to draw upon, for people like Erasmus and Rabelais found much to digest in them.

It is a multiple biography of the entire team of personal and political competitors that he put together to lead the country through its greatest crisis. Here, Doris Kearns Goodwin profiles five of the key players in her book, four of whom contended for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and all of whom later worked together in Lincoln's cabinet. 1. Edwin M. Stanton
Stanton treated Lincoln with utter contempt at their initial acquaintance when the two men were involved in a celebrated law case in the summer of 1855. Unimaginable as it might seem after Stanton's demeaning behavior, Lincoln offered him "the most powerful civilian post within his gift"--the post of secretary of war--at their next encounter six years later. On his first day in office as Simon Cameron's replacement, the energetic, hardworking Stanton instituted "an entirely new regime" in the War Department. After nearly a year of disappointment with Cameron, Lincoln had found in Stanton the leader the War Department desperately needed. Lincoln's choice of Stanton revealed his singular ability to transcend personal vendetta, humiliation, or bitterness. As for Stanton, despite his initial contempt for the man he once described as a "long armed Ape," he not only accepted the offer but came to respect and love Lincoln more than any person outside of his immediate family. He was beside himself with grief for weeks after the president's death.

2. Salmon P. Chase
Chase, an Ohioan, had been both senator and governor, had played a central role in the formation of the national Republican Party, and had shown an unflagging commitment to the cause of the black man. No individual felt he deserved the presidency as a natural result of his past contributions more than Chase himself, but he refused to engage in the practical methods by which nominations are won. He had virtually no campaign and he failed to conciliate his many enemies in Ohio itself. As a result, he alone among the candidates came to the convention without the united support of his own state. Chase never ceased to underestimate Lincoln, nor to resent the fact that he had lost the presidency to a man he considered his inferior. His frustration with his position as secretary of the treasury was alleviated only by his his dogged hope that he, rather than Lincoln, would be the Republican nominee in 1864, and he steadfastly worked to that end. The president put up with Chase's machinations and haughty yet fundamentally insecure nature because he recognized his superlative accomplishments at treasury. Eventually, however, Chase threatened to split the Republican Party by continuing to fill key positions with partisans who supported his presidential hopes. When Lincoln stepped in, Chase tendered his resignation as he had three times before, but this time Lincoln stunned Chase by calling his bluff and accepting the offer.

3. Abraham Lincoln
When Lincoln won the Republican presidential nomination in 1860 he seemed to have come from nowhere--a backwoods lawyer who had served one undistinguished term in the House of Representatives and lost two consecutive contests for the U.S. Senate. Contemporaries attributed his surprising nomination to chance, to his moderate position on slavery, and to the fact that he hailed from the battleground state of Illinois. But Lincoln's triumph, particularly when viewed against the efforts of his rivals, owed much to a remarkable, unsuspected political acuity and an emotional strength forged in the crucible of hardship and defeat. That Lincoln, after winning the presidency, made the unprecedented decision to incorporate his eminent rivals into his political family, the cabinet, was evidence of an uncanny self-confidence and an indication of what would prove to others a most unexpected greatness.

4. William H. Seward
A celebrated senator from New York for more than a decade and governor of his state for two terms before going to Washington, Seward was certain he was going to receive his party's nomination for president in 1860. The weekend before the convention in Chicago opened he had already composed a first draft of the valedictory speech he expected to make to the Senate, assuming that he would resign his position as soon as the decision in Chicago was made. His mortification at not having received the nomination never fully abated, and when he was offered his cabinet post as secretary of state he intended to have a major role in choosing the remaining cabinet members, conferring upon himself a position in the new government more commanding than that of Lincoln himself. He quickly realized the futility of his plan to relegate the president to a figurehead role. Though the feisty New Yorker would continue to debate numerous issues with Lincoln in the years ahead, exactly as Lincoln had hoped and needed him to do, Seward would become his closest friend, advisor, and ally in the administration. More than any other cabinet member Seward appreciated Lincoln's peerless skill in balancing factions both within his administration and in the country at large.

5. Edward Bates
A widely respected elder statesman, a delegate to the convention that framed the Missouri Constitution, and a former Missouri congressman whose opinions on national matters were still widely sought, Bates's ambitions for political success were gradually displaced by love for his wife and large family, and he withdrew from public life in the late 1840s. For the next 20 years he was asked repeatedly to run or once again accept high government posts but he consistently declined. However in early 1860, with letters and newspaper editorials advocating his candidacy crowding in upon him, he decided to try for the highest office in the land. After losing to Lincoln he vowed, in his diary, to decline a cabinet position if one were to be offered, but with the country "in trouble and danger" he felt it was his duty to accept when Lincoln asked him to be attorney general. Though Bates initially viewed Lincoln as a well-meaning but incompetent administrator, he eventually concluded that the president was an unmatched leader, "very near being a 'perfect man.'"

While Goodwin's introduction is a helpful summary and explanation for why another book about Lincoln, her reading abilities are limited: Her tone is flat and dry, and her articulation is overly precise. But the introduction isn't long and we soon arrive at Richard Thomas's lovely and lively reading of an excellent book. The abridgment (from 944 pages) makes it easy to follow the narrative and the underlying theme. Pauses are often used to imply ellipses, and one is never lost. But the audio version might have been longer, for there is often a wish to know a little more about some event or personality or relationship. Goodwin's writing is always sharp and clear, and she uses quotes to great effect. The book's originality lies in the focus on relationships among the men Lincoln chose for his cabinet and highest offices: three were his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860, and each considered himself the only worthy candidate. One is left with a concrete picture of Lincoln's political genius—derived from a character without malice or jealousy—which shaped the history of our nation. One is also left with the painful sense of how our history might have differed had Lincoln lived to guide the Reconstruction.

Critics generally agree that Goodwin’s 10-year project on Honest Abe paid off. Many lauded the well-rounded, intimate, and admiring portrait she paints of our 16th president by weaving some good old-fashioned storytelling with the hard facts. Abe’s cabinet members, Seward in particular, also receive their due. Despite the more than 100 pages of footnotes that chronicle Goodwin’s impressive primary research, a few critics found the book redundant, its first third difficult to read, and Lincoln’s stand on race nearly ignored. Overall, however, most reviewers found Team of Rivals remarkably resonant today, given the young Lincoln’s brash attacks on President Polk, who he claimed pushed the country into the needless Mexican War. For an inside look at Abe’s political genius, Goodwin’s work is a good place to start.

Best. Lincoln. Book. Ever.

This book more than any others I have read on the subject, show Lincoln's intellectual growth over time. To dwell on a subject over the course of many years, weeding out weaker ideas and strengthen his reason. It also exhibits his humility; his ability to discuss or dismiss the clamor of the day; the hue and cry of those who would demand peace at almost any price. He ultimately sacrificed his life so that slavery would be wiped from the entire nation. Not just states entering the union from his time forward.

This book also includes an answer to an interview question posed to Leo Tolstoy, who called Lincoln "Christ in miniature.". I actually read this prior to purchasing the book, and it intrigued me that Mrs Goodwin included it.

Her insight into the characters surrounding Lincoln are as deep as those on the man himself. Without this the insights into Lincoln would be simple; useless.

I've read so many books about this man, but this book is far and away the deepest.

In-depth story of President Lincoln and the politics of the Civil War era

Excellent reading. A complete story of the genius of Abraham Lincoln and how he assembled a cabinet from his political rivals to lead the country through the Civil War. Goodwin, through extensive research of not only Lincoln's writings and speeches, but those of Secretary of State Seward and Secretary of War Stanton and many others,, profiles historic figures of the era. She paints a picture of Lincoln's personality and his ability to use humor and magnanimity to repair the Union and secure freedom from slavery for its citizens. He also married one of my relatives, Mary Todd, and Goodwin offers a sympathetic view of Mrs. Lincoln.

Worth a second read

I actually read this several years ago but decided to reread it as it is a lot to take in. That is true even the second time. There is no doubt that Lincoln was one of an elite group of highly effective presidents. Few can compare to the aplomb with which he handled not only the highly contentious political scene but managed a brutal war at the same time. I could not help but reflect on how effective he was by bringing everyone, including rivals like Salmon Chase who continued to criticize him openly during his tenure, into his circle of friends. I wonder how different our current political situation would be if our president really studied the way Lincoln was able to accomplish so much. If there is any criticism of the book it would be that at times the narrative seems almost fawning in nature. That being said, I didn't do the extensive research that Goodwin did.

Good reference

I absolutely disagree with the book's critics. (CORRECTED)
We have used this book to identify lodging possibilities on several trips to Italy. I have found the contact information a good starting point. Perhaps I an showing my age, but I never rely on only one source for any information. We verify everything.
Every directory has some minor flaws. That's why you need to use information from directories with an open mind. For example, on one occasion, a fax number was answered repeatedly by a human. On a hunch, I sent the fax to the "voice" number, and it was promptly answered by the fax. Either the numbers were switched in the directory, or the numbers were correct and the equipment was switched. Either way, no problem. In another case, we found that one convent had been severaly damaged by an earthquake and was not accepting reservations.
As far as the rooms go, we have stayed in over 10 Italian convents and monasteries in the last few years. Some were relatively modern and some date back to the 11th century. Generally, convents and monasteries are in the old sections of the cities and provide more realistic experiences within the culture.
We do not expect the convents and monasteries to be a four-star hotels, nor have several hundred Euro nightly rates. Most of the rooms were modest. (One was luxurious, even by US standards.) All had modern bathrooms in the room, (except one which was 10 feet down the hall). All were very clean and orderly with good security. Some had late (or no) curfews. Some even had television.
We are quite satisfied with the accommodations because we use our room only for reflection and rest, and spend most of the time exploring Italian culture and history.
As far as getting more information on the portential lodgings, we simply plug the name of the convent into a search engine and often we are directed to a web-site for that facility, or at least that order. If you score a hit with the search engine, you may be able to conduct your transactions on-line or via e-mail. But, again, the information in this guide helps you get started with your research, by giving you the names and locations.
This book simply starts you in the right direction by telling you where to look. If I expected all my questions to be answered without having to do research, I'd consult a travel agent.
Please keep in mind that it may be helpful to send faxes during Italian business hours. Some of the convents and monasteries seem to turn their faxes off during their night-time hours. This was quite aggravating until I figured it out and send my faxes (successfully) at a different hour. Also, if there is a technical problem, their fax may be out of service for several days (or longer).

sophistication on the budget

I originally bought the book because I needed suggestions for low cost accomodations for my next trip.After I read the book,I ended up planning the whole vacation around the theme "Monasteries in Italy".The brief but rich info on the history,art,location,traditions,makes the monasteries and convents in this book a most desirable spot to visit for themselves.The author gives all the practical info needed (price, directions, people to contact, restrictions that may apply)for a successful lodging in the most sought after locations in Italy , as well as in the most remote,pristine places.This book is by far the richest and the most helpful when it comes to convent lodgings in Italy.

useful guide to alternative accomodation

You can stay in monasteries - not as a religious retreat - in Italy for very little money and easy availability. This book is the best resource available for it in English.
However, as a guide book, the info it offers beyond addresses and telephone numbers, is not great. These places vary greatly in quality and price. Moreover, no directions to get to them - and they are in odd corners of Italy! - are offered, which means you will have trouble EVERY time you try to find one.
Recommended, but make sure you have a bevy of other guide books with you for more detailed info.

Essential book for anyone trying to improve a process

I have used this book extensively in observing processes when I was working as an engineer. Invariably if I got into a situation where I did no know what to do next, this was the book that always helped me out.
Don't let the publication date of 1963 put you off. All this data is still valid.

A fundamental book and a good investment

This book was originally prepared for the US Army as a practical statistics manual, known as Handbook 91, and printed by the US Government Printing Office. Still very useful for the the occasional user of statistical methods like myself. Recommendation: buy now in case it goes out of print again. With Dr. Deming's The New Economics, all you need to start your quality bookshelf. Advanced Analysis of Tournament Situations

First, I loved the first two books. These books are not about laying out strategies, breaking tourneys into phases or telling you how label other players. They assume that you know most of this going in. What they are is detailed analysis of specific hands at specific points in a variety of online tourneys. The latest Volume focuses on 50 hands and has all three pros, along with Matt Miller, evaluate each action on each street. So they demonstrate first hand how you APPLY the strategies the other books describe. While you can get all the opinions on hundreds of hands that you want by surfing online forums, what you are paying for here is filtering the analysis to only that from demonstrably successful pros. I only give it four stars now for relevance - online poker may eventually return to the US, but until then this info - drawn primarily from online games - is not 100% applicable.

Excellent Book

I found the book to be excellent!
I read voloumes one and two, and enjoyed them very much.
Volume three was what I was expecting. I like going through a hand one step at a time because then I can make a judgement call and think about what I
would do based on the prevailing circumstances at the time in the hand.

The book is well presented, and I like that I can set the book down anytime and come back and start reading a section on a new hand with nothing lost in between.
Also, it is nice to go back and review hands already read and see if my opinion has changed after reading the authors explanation of what they did.

I have the eversion of the book, and that works well for me.

Great Book guys - even slightly better than Vol 1 and 2. I enjoyed that the pros will analyze small tangents in many of the hands, considering a situation that is slightly different from the given hand. It really lets the reader see how small differences can change the analysis. I am re-reading the book now using the "type of hand" index (ie AK, pairs, bluffing etc.) and I am getting a fun, slightly different perspective. I have read many poker books and this is one of the best. It is comparable to Ed Miller's great work on the cash game side.

The authors develop a multitheoretical model that relates different social science theories with different network properties. This model is multilevel, providing a network decomposition that applies the various social theories to all network levels: individuals, dyads, triples, groups, and the entire network. The book then establishes a model from the perspective of complex adaptive systems and demonstrates how to use Blanche, an agent-based network computer simulation environment, to generate and test network theories and hypotheses. It presents recent developments in network statistical analysis, the p* family, which provides a basis for valid multilevel statistical inferences regarding networks. Finally, it shows how to relate communication networks to other networks, thus providing the basis in conjunction with computer simulations to study the emergence of dynamic organizational networks.

Must read

I think is is a very good book and very effectively highlights the various socio-coginitve issues that are prevalent in communications. The theories could be applied to form new networks or to improve the strength of existing networks. The most prominent feature of the book is that it convincingly draws relationship between diffrent types of theories present in other disciplines ranging from Complexity theory to chaos theory. I wish the book had more illustrations and graphical examples. The format of the book is monotonous. But overall it certainly deserves 5 stars.

Good material, but needs a lot better organization.

The book covers many interesting things, but the organization of the topics needs a lot of improvement.

Pros:

(1) Covers a lot of theories that you will find interesting, if you are working on network-related studies.

(2) Hands-on, step-by-step guidelines on how to use PSPAR program to do p* modeling.

Cons:

(1) The Table of Contents should be a lot more detailed. At least include the subsections. Every time I tried to find something that I read earlier, it takes a long time.

(2) Need more subsections within the chapters.

(3) Applying the ERGM model - I hope the authors have plans to update the book using more state-of-the-art programs like Statnet. PSPAR might be good but hasn't been updated for a long time.

Overall, I think it's good to keep as a reference. The MTML (Multi-thoeretical, multi-level) approach that they propose makes sense, but it just leaves you a feeling that they are trying to say a lot of things but didn't quite accomplish that. If they are stronger on the application part (i.e. how to actually model your data) with good software, it would have been much more helpful.

THIS BOOK IS THE GOLD STANDARD...

to which all other books written about network communications should be measured. Incredibly intelligent, thoroughly engagaging, this reader picked up this book out of curiosity, and was completely in awe of the complexity of networking. This book does a beautiful job of combining inferential statistics with dynamic theory. You will not want to put this down; this reader called in sick to work in order to finish the book. If you are going to own one book about networking, it should be this book. Seriously.
