I have read all of the Jefferson Winter novels by James Carol and would recommend them all. I love that the Jefferson Winter character is intriguing and unpredictable and so interesting - a psychopath working with the police to catch serial killers. Can't wait for the next installment.

Short, snappy and well written novella. Love Jefferson Winter!

After loving Broken Dolls by James Carol, I grabbed this short novella to see if I could get more of Jefferson Winter, and yes I did! He really is a fantastic character, so many elements of light and shade in him. Conflicting aspects. Very intriguing.

Being a short novella I was expecting a bit more punch than what this delivered, it was a good short read but didn't get my heart rate up like Broken Dolls did. It does however give a bit more background on Winter as a character.

FBI profiler Yoko Tanaka is in Tampa, Florida helping the local PD with their 'Sandman' case. Three mothers and their daughters have been found murdered in their homes. The mothers have been brutally stabbed while the little girls' have been smothered in their beds and posed to look like they're sleeping.

Defying FBI protocol, Yoko makes a detour to Sarasota to entice Jefferson Winter to join the case.

Winter helps Tanaka profile the serial killer tagged The Sandman, she's risking her job asking him to help her but knows his brilliance is needed to crack the case. Do they find this cold blooded killer? They might, they might not, that's the beauty of reading the book, you need to do that as I am not telling you how it ends.

This is a middle of the road crime read for me, good enough to keep me interested but a shade of getting me really excited. It does have the darker element to it that Broken Dolls does. I am keen to read a lot more from this author and extra excited about seeing Jefferson Winter grow as a character.

David Burch, the director of the Starpath School of Navigation in Seattle, Washington, has been teaching navigation and seamanship since 1977. He has logged more than 60,000 sea miles, including three wins in the trans-Pacific Victoria to Maui yacht race. He is the author of nine books on marine navigation, including Emergency Navigation (International Marine, 1984), and his magazine articles have appeared in "Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, Sailing", and "Sea Kayaker". He holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's license (100 tons). He is also a past Fulbright Scholar and holds a PhD in physics.

This accessible work explores the primary groups of Indian peoples most important to Pennsylvania’s history—its most prevalent, primarily the Delaware or Lenni Lenape and the Susquehannock people, and the outside groups that had the largest impact upon Pennsylvania, primarily the neighboring Iroquois and refugee groups such as the Shawnee. The volume explores customs, governance, belief systems, conflict, migration, and policy, among many other topics. Sympathetic and balanced, this book has long been considered one of the best books on the Indian peoples of Pennsylvania.

About the Author

Paul A. W. Wallace (d. 1967) was a noted anthropologist and historian who served on the staff of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission from 1957 to 1965. He was the author of numerous volumes on the history of the Indians in Pennsylvania during the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s.

Thorough and accessible historical and cultural overview

I was really pleased with this book, all the more so since it was published in 1970, when attitudes towards Native Americans weren't as they are today in 2005.

The book is not too long, but thorough and well-documented. It's about right for someone who's really busy and just wants a good and thorough overview.

The book explains well the various tribes (including the Delaware, Iriquois, Eries, Susquehannocks, Shawnee, Conoy, Conestoga, Mohawk, Oneida, Tuscarora, and Wyandots), although it's focus is particularly on the Delaware and Iriquois, who were descendant and ascendant at the time. Wallace does a particularly good job explaining the impact of white settlers on the native tribes, particularly in terms of the impact on native economics, which drove local tribes to immediately abandon traditional weapons for guns, which they could only get from the settlers. In order to get guns, the only item the settlers wanted were furs, which were in demand in Europe, particularly beaver. Immediately the local animal populations were devastated, and in order to get more, the Native tribes had to go further and further west. All the tribes realized that their fates were precarious, as they dealt with the English in the East and the French to the North, and the Indian tribes weren't innocent, they worked politics and alliances as well as the English... although perhaps not as well as the French. The Iriquois in particular had a clear vision of what they had to do to survive, and jockeyed to become the middle-men between the other Indian tribes and the settlers.

There's much more than this, including primary source accounts from the 17th and 18th Century, well-balanced descriptions of culture, technology, religion, and ceremonies, maps and illustrations, and the final migration of the Indians out of Pennsylvania, based on a series of land purchases and the "extinguishment of Indian title." And of course much history about the wars and conflicts between tribes and the settlers.

History has been revised (as it has been before and will be before), and this book may have an older point of view that may not be what is conventional wisdom today regarding relations between the settlers and natives. But in some ways this point of view is new to me, and is worth considering. Rather than being entirely stolen, land in pennsylvania was purchased in fairly above-board manners that surprised me. When taken in context of how land had been won and lost between the tribes for centuries before, and how there was a vast uninhabited area in Western Pennsylvania due to the disappearnce of the Monongahelia tribe (due to plague or conquest is unknown), it puts things in a new perspective. That doesn't lessen by any means other tragic events (such as the forced relocation through the Trail of Tears, etc.) and what conventional wisdom says are hundreds of other broken treaties, but it is a different perspective.

I'd recommend this book for people with an interest in local history, and students in high school and perhaps junior high school.

An insightful look at the REAL history of Native Americans.

Paul A. W. Wallace offers us an unbiased account of the history of
the Native American people of Pennsylvania. Each chapter made
me want to learn more about the individual tribe that was
represented in its pages and inspired me to continue reading.

Mr. Wallace does not ever compare the European settlers with
the Indians and say that one was more savage than the other.
He merely points out that the Native American people were
more intelligent than what the history books would have us
believe. Paul Wallace introduces us to an innocent culture
and guides us through the necessary metamorphosis of a land
besieged by "conquerors."

If you're interested in the plight of Native Americans, or
in the history of Pennsylvania, this book should become the
keystone of your library!

The real truth in history

"Indians in Pennsylvania" provides a very concise overview of Native American cultures and covers the interaction of the European immigration. This is one of the best presentations of interaction of the "White Man" and the Native North Americans that I have read.

So disappointed.

I am so disappointed. I went out and bought the recommended brand ingredients. First recipe was so runny it never set up so I pitched it. Confident I had done something wrong I went on to recipe two. Same thing. The ratio of liquid to dry ingredients is way out of porportion. To make these recipes will be a try and fail to figure out the correct measurements. Not sure it's worth the trouble. I'll just look for new recipes.

I've been enjoying this book, and have made a few of the recipes. Some of them I liked and some of them I didn't, pretty much like all recipe books. If you're interested in making your own protein bars, I think you'll find this a useful read.
