The canonical version of “The Shooting Star” is my favorite Tintin adventure. The slapstick humor and the, shall we say, Haddockisms are kept down to a minimum. The actual plot takes centre stage, as Tintin and his friends embark on a scientific expedition to the Arctic Sea in order to claim a huge meteorite containing a mysterious metal. The story contains a few science fiction elements, and lampoons both distracted scientists and doomsday prophets (in the Swedish version, the prophet Philippulus is actually called Pythagoras). Naturally, a greedy banker from “Sao Rico”, a certain Mr Bohlwinkel, also wants to lay his hands on the valuable piece of space debris, and does everything in his power to sabotage the legitimate expedition. Parallels to Jules Verne's “The Golden Meteor” have been duly noted.

Unfortunately, “The Shooting Star” is seriously marred by the fact that the original version was published in Nazi-occupied Belgium and contained anti-Semitic propaganda. The greedy banker was named Blumenstein in the original, and his expedition sailed from the United States, a nation the Nazis claimed was controlled by Jews. It also contained other examples of anti-Semitism. Tintin's creator Herg� cleaned up the story after World War II, but that simply made matters worse, since he came across as an opportunist (which he, of course, was).

The de-Nazification of “The Shooting Star” also created a number of anomalies. I always wondered why most characters from the purported Latin American nation of “Sao Rico” look White and have English names. That's because they *were* North Americans in the original version. Bohlwinkel (ex-Blumenstein) still looks pretty “Jewish”, however, and even spouts a red star-like emblem on his tuxedo! Meanwhile, defenders of Herg� has claimed that the original story contains secret anti-Nazi codes, such as the menacing spider being called “fasciata” (compare “fascism”), or the crazy prophet's name Phillipulus (compare Phillip Pet�in). I'm not sure if I buy this, and I wonder whether anyone ever noticed at the time?

About the Author

Professor Ian Mackay is an Honorary Professional Research Fellow of Monash University, Australia, and member of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
In a career spanning over six decades, with over 700 publications, Professor Mackay has gained international recognition as a pioneer in the area of autoimmunity; with his research contributing to the development of immunosuppressive treatment for autoimmune diseases.
In recognition of his service to medical research, Prof. Mackay was included in the 1981 Australia Day Honours list and was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia. In 2001 he was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society and science in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Dr. Rose is the Director of Center for Autoimmune Disease Research and a Professor in the Department of Pathology (with joint appointment in Department of Medicine), the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a Professor in the W. Henry Feinstone Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Rose also served as the Chairman of the Autoimmune Diseases Coordinating Committee of the National Institutes of Health and a principal advisor to the former U.S. NIH Director Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni. He was the Chairman of the W. Henry Feinstone Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health for more than a decade.

Dr. Rose’s pioneering studies on autoimmune thyroiditis and myocarditis helped to initiate the modern era of research on autoimmune diseases. Dr. Rose and his colleagues have continued to contribute to our understanding of autoimmunity, including the first demonstration of the genetic factors responsible for predisposition to autoimmune disease in animals and more recent investigations on the influence of infection and environmental agents in the initiation of autoimmune disease in genetically predisposed animals.

Dr. Rose is the co-author of the textbook The Autoimmune Diseases (now 3rd edition) and former Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Immunology. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of The Year in Immunology

Besides editing a monthly Urdu journal for women, she has produced and scripted a number of documentaries and television programmes. One of the Most Complete, Comprehensive, Beautiful, and Expert Books on Sufism

This is one of the most complete and comprehensive books on Sufism, in the sense of including Sufi teachings, Sufi biography and Sufi history.

More than a book about Sufism, it presents so many teachings from Qur'an, Hadith, and Sufis Masters and poets that it is also a resource and guidebook for the path of Sufism. Dehlvi's *Sufism: the Heart of Islam* is a treasure trove of the lore and legacy that make up Sufism. The author takes us step by step through the stories of each of the early Sufis--starting with the Prophet Muhammad and his companions and advancing through the great early Sufi heroes of the first few centuries, e.g. Uways, Salman al-Farsi,Hasan al-Basri, Ibrahim ibn Adham, Rabia, Sayyeda Nafisa, Fatima of Nishapur, and on to Dhu'l Nun Misri Abu Yazid al-Bestami, Junayd, Hallaj, al-Ghazzali, Ibn 'Arabi and Datta Gang Bakhsh (Hujwiri). Included are almost everyone in the classic hagiographies, such as Fariduddin 'Attar.Dehlevi's narratives are both beautiful as well as expert. Dehlvi clarifies that Sufism emanates directly from the Prophet's example and wisdom, but also his love for humanity and that the path deeply involves humanity's love for him.

Throughout this trajectory Dehlvi manages to weave a significant number of the key Sufi teachings in the Qur'an and the Hadith. Then she narrates the history of the first Sufi Orders, especially (but not limited to) those Orders that flourished in India. A sort of interlude helpfully explains the contested relationship between Wahhabi/Salafi Muslims and Sufis.

Next she presents a collection of epigrammic and proverbial quotes of wisdom from the early Sufis. Two chapters are devoted to compiling and presenting the major Sufi hadith and Qur'an verses. The book concludes with the lists of the most beautiful names of God and the noble names of the Prophet. There is also a glossary of Sufi terms.

Dehlvi's book is so comprehensive and thorough that commands attention among other books of its caliber, by which I mean especially Annemaries Schimmel's *Islamic Mysticism* and Carl Ernst's *An Introduction to Islamic Mysticism.* There's an autobiographical energy that drives this book. In fact a beautiful aspect of the book is that most chapters begin with an anecdote of Dehlvi's life and/or Sufi experience. (Dehlvi grew up in a Chishti family and took initiation 1978 with her teacher Shaykh Farooq Rahmani.) There's an authentic voice here. And finally the book is liberally enhanced by Islamic calligraphy throughout.

Since I teach introductory University courses on Sufism, I am so happy to have found this book as a superb introduction to Sufism at large and also Indian Sufism. And I am also happy to have found this book as a one-stop resource for the lore and legacy of Islamic Sufism and the steps on the path..

Good introductory content

This book by Sadia Dehlvi offers good introductory content on the history of Sufism in general & then goes on to document the Sufi orders of India highlighting in these chapters the prominent Sufis of each order, their lives & anecdotes. Finally, it finishes with very beautiful verses underscoring the wisdom of the Sufis, collection of Sufi poetry, Quranic text popular within the Sufi text & some content in the appendix on the names of Allah & such.

For those of us not exposed to Sufism, this book may serve as a good primer blending history, poetry, philosophy & anecdotes all in a nice little bundle. You have to concede that a chunk of it is focused on the history of Sufism in India & not so much across the world, barring the history of origination. Dehlvi strives to link Sufism to both mainstream Islam & in particular to the Prophet but avoids, somewhat safely, any polemic that surrounds this mystic sect of Islam. In fact, she devotes one small chapter to the voices that disagree with Sufism being a part of mainstream Islam.

Because this book covers various aspects of Sufism, I think it may be a good starting point to underscore your interest in a particular aspect of Sufism & using the extensive bibliography at the end to learn about your particular area of interest. Dehlvi's text is both simple & engaging & it'll hold your interest.

This is the second book I have read of Sadia Dehlvi, and this is even better than the earlier book (much of what I sought in 'Gardens...' is contained in this book. This book is as comprehensive as it can be, covering the origin of Sufism, the Islamic moorings of Sufism (one which I doubted initially), the life of the Prophet as a Sufi and an inspirer of Sufi saints, the lives of leading Sufi Saints who defined the subject (from Junayd Bagdadi, to Abdul Qadir Jilani, to Mansur and Rabia), and finally to the Sufi Silsilas and Saints in the Indian Sub Continent. There is a nice round up of teachings of the saints in addition to the Hadith extracts. What I love about Sadia Dehlvi's writing is that in addition to being well researched it is over-flowing with divinity. I disagree with her premise that Sufism is grounded in Islam, and its identity is indistinguishable from Islam (and in fact is the 'true' Islam), but her book proves me wrong on many counts, with solid research. A fantastic, highly recommended read.

About the Author
Dr. Oran B. Hesterman is the president and CEO of Fair Food Network. For fifteen years he led the Integrated Farming Systems and Food and Society Programs for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, during which time he seeded the local food systems movement with over 200 million. A native of Berkeley, California, and a former professor of agronomy at Michigan State University in East Lansing, he currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

An Important Contribution to Food Justice

This book makes an important contribution to the movement for food justice. Unlike many who write about food systems issues, Hesterman highlights issues related to poverty, hunger, race, and class. He firmly (but politely) takes to task well-heeled "foodies" who, all too often, overlook these vital concerns, consumed only by their personal pursuit of the perfect heirloom tomato.

In contrast to some writers who want to patronizingly limit the kinds of food that low-income people can obtain, Hesterman understands that the prime reason low-income people don't eat more healthily is that nutritious food is often unavailable and/or unaffordable in low-income neighborhoods. He offers a number of practical policy and programatic suggestions for increasing the ability of all people in all neighborhoods to afford and obtain the highest quality food.

Given his expertise in both the science of agriculture and the practicality of scaling-up community food projects, Hesterman is particularly persuasive in arguing against making "small is beautiful" the one and only ethos of all food systems work. He explains that simply expanding small pilot projects will never be enough to ensure just food for all. His reasoning builds the case for a new type of food system that can be large, efficient, mass-produced - at the same time it is just for food workers, producers, consumers, the environment alike.

Most importantly, the book offers a compelling case for all citizens to be involved in public policy advocacy to improve government policies and economic systems.

Thinking about others in addition to yourself and loved ones

In some ways, Fair Food is a great book to read after reading The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. Omnivore's Dilemma enlightens us so that we might make better choices in the foods we eat by understanding where our food comes from. Fair Food enlightens us about food policy and its implications. (For instance;) Not how we can make better personal food choices but how we can be sure that all Americans will have healthy food choices in their local communities. Fair Food enlightens us in how we can make a better world for everyone by educating us about the various aspects of food policy.

A recent New York Times review of this book (June 4, 2011 - Fresh Tomatoes for Inner Cities by Nancy Koehn) took the book to task for failing to discuss certain food policy related subjects. The NY Times reviewer recommended the book in spite of these shortcomings. I agree with the NY Times reviewer. It would've have been nice if the book was longer and covered the additional topics that the reviewer thought should have been covered but Fair Food is still a very very worthwhile read in spite of this. It covers lots of important issues that should inform and influence our views on issues that impact everyone.

I hope this book is read by those (theoretically all of us) who will have influence on the next Farm Bill. As said in other reviews, this book is very "accessible" (not assuming great technical knowledge of the subjects covered) and relatively short. It has a large resources section at the end should one wish to look further into any of the subjects discussed in main part of the book. It is also a great book for those who wish to advocate for better food policies (improving the world and not just your personal meals). As with many other public policy issues, the more the public knows about an issue then the more likely that a good policy will be created as a result.

The best book I've found yet!

I'm a systems analyst, and wanted to get into building *things* instead of just code. So, I bought a few electronics books and set out to learn. I quickly found out that many books expect a lot of background knowledge, or just briefly touch on something and then use the concept extensively later on. This all made learning quite frustrating.
That was until I found this book... This book is leaps and bounds above the others... The author explains things very clearly, and really starts from the begining. The writing style is very easy to read, and the projects in the book are actually useful. I've since bought this author's audio projects book, which is also very good.
Another thing that really impressed me about this book is that the author answers his email. I had a question about a modification I wanted to make to one of his designs, and he gave me a very detailed answer, and even sent me part numbers that would be appropriate for the task.
If you're setting out to learn electronics - this is definitely the book you want :)

An excellent introduction to practical electronics

For most people, this a probably the best book available to self-teach yourself electronics. It briefly introduces the theoretical concepts, but it is mostly focused on the practical side of things. The first two chapters deal with the basics-- setting up a workstation, selecting tools, briefly introducing each component (later chapters go into much more detail), and finally about 35 pages or so on the underlying theories & laws. From there on, each chapter introduces a specific component type, covers more of the theory relevant to those components, and in most cases the chapter ends with one or more projects that use the component. The projects range from short (one or two pages) circuits, to fairly involved projects spread over multiple chapters. Unlike some eletcronic books, most of these projects will be generally useful. In most cases, you are building tools that you will probably continue to use as you skills develop (The first project, for example, is a dual variable power supply that any electronics hobbyist will find quite useful.)

There are a few minor problems with the book, though none of them warrant deducting a star. The biggest thing that I've noticed so far is the lack of photographs. There are a few photos in chapter one and two showing each tool and examples of the components, but there are no photos at all showing any of the projects. The projects are illustrated with line drawings & schematics, but in some cases the instructions would be clearer with the addition of photos. The section on soldering has the same problem. The text is quite clear, but the addition of a photo or two would be beneficial.

Another reviewer complains about schematic symbols being used without being introduced. He's correct, Slone doesn't actually define any of the schematic symbols, nor does he include a section on reading schematics. That's clearly a pretty big oversight, and it should be fixed in a later edition. That said, all of the schematics are quite clearly labeled. While it may not be immediately obvious to someone with no electronic knowledge what T1 refers to on a schematic, it shouldn't be to hard to figure out that, considering you are reading a chapter on transformers, it probably means "the first transformer". Anytime that it's not obvious the component is labeled specifically.

The same reviewer also complains that the book is focused to heavily on projects, not enough on theory. Most people will probably think that's a good thing, but rest assured that you will learn enough theory here to get you started. Writing a book like this is a fine balancing act between introducing enough theory to make the concepts clear, but not so much as to turn off the casual hobbyist. This book does an outstanding job of walking that tightrope. If you still feel you need more theory after reading this book, you there are dozens of other books that you can graduate to from here, and this book will get the groundwork in place so you will be able to understand those books.

This book got me through college!

I want to say that this is the best electronics teach yourself book for beginners I have ever read (if this changes I will edit this review to reflect it). While I have advanced to more sophisticated books my footing is firmly planted in the theories and applications this book taught me.

After two years of electrical engineering schooling at the University of North Dakota I was doing well but always felt I didn't quite have a grasp on a lot of the basics (especially transistors, capacitors, and inductors). In engineering all we hear is theory and math and never is there anything really explained at a practical level (Such as for use in DIY projects). So I got this book without really knowing all that much about practical electronics principles. This book (along with Mr. Slone's other book (The Audiophile's Project Sourcebook)) got me through all of my labs and assigments in electronics (three semesters worth).

This book does not describe the nitty gritty theory of everything, but that isn't its purpose. The purpose of this book is to give the reader a working knowledge of electronics principles, and it does that VERY well. I wish I would have had this book many years ago...

As a compliment to this book I also read "Practical Electronics for Inventors" by Paul Scherz. In fact, I would be say that if you studied this book well and combined it with the previous two books (which will provide even more real world experience) you will come out of it with a better general knowledge of electronics than almost any electrical engineer out of college.

If you are reading this and ARE an electrical engineer or EE student you should seriously consider this book and the others to enhance your current breadth of knowledge if you feel you aren't quite connecting it all, as I wasn't at one point. If you are neither of these but rather somebody who is interested in learning about the field of electronics with the thought of creating your own circuits someday, this book will be invaluable to you.

Overall this book is excellent and very easy to read and I highly recommend it to beginners and experienced people who might need a refresher course. This book is very simple, and one should not expect to become an expert in the subject with just this. As for weaknesses, I cannot think of any, since this book is exactly what I needed to tie everything together in my mind. So for the inherent value of a "non-textbook" approach to electronics along with its easy to understand flow and do it yourself projects, I give this book a perfect 5 stars.
