About the Author
Enrica Garzilli is a specialist of Indology and modern Asian studies, editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Tantric Studies and the Journal of South Asia Women Studies, a former professor at the universities of Delhi, Perugia, Harvard, and Turin, and author of the first official biography of Giuseppe Tucci. She graduated in Sanskrit (Doctor, 110/110) from the University of Rome La Sapienza with Raniero Gnoli, Giuseppe Tucci's most beloved pupil, and studied with others of his renowned students, including the art historian Mario Bussagli, and the famed Tibetologist Luciano Petech. In 1989 she published her thesis, The Spandasamdoha of Ksemarsja, a critical edition and translation of the 12th-century philosophical text in Sanskrit. Following graduation, she went on to take a post-doc Master in Computer Science for the Humanities at the University of Rome La Sapienza, and later received a post-doc Master in History from the University for Foreigners of Perugia. Among her professors were the great historians Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli and Jacques Le Goff. She was also the recipient of a fellowship from the Cultural Exchange Program between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of India, as Research Affiliate at the University of Delhi. During her fifteen-year teaching career, she has been a professor at various Italian and foreign universities, teaching principally Sanskrit, Indian Studies, Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, History of Indian Law, Human Rights, and the History of Asia. From her initial studies of ancient South Asia India and Nepal she has since broadened her geopolitical and temporal horizons to cover contemporary times and countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tibet (or what is now the Tibet Autonomous Region or Xizang, a region of the People s Republic of China). While teaching, she persisted in her studies and was admitted to the Graduate Program at Harvard Law School as a Visiting Researcher (y. 1994 1996), attending courses on International Law and Human Rights. Thanks to the years spent in Asia, she has become increasingly interested in contemporary politics, its institutions and its relations with the West. From 2002 she began researching and publishing on contemporary India, Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since 2006 she has been publishing on Asia in leading Italian newspapers and magazines such as Limes, ISPI Institute for International Policy Studies, Il Sole 24 Ore, and Il Fatto quotidiano.

Not what is described on this page.

Maybe the translation is at fault - the book sent me has nothing as described on this page. It is a mishmash of material, and not very useful. Again, maybe the Italian version is complete, and the translation heavily abridged. The English translation is not worth owning.

Read the dimensions before ordering, book is rather small

I made the mistake of not checking out the dimensions before I placed my order. The book is rather small, but it will get the job done. It may pose a problem to women with large handwriting. The questions are relevant and thought-provoking, but considering the size, there may not be enough room to answer without running out of space. Definitely something to consider before ordering.

The way the book is bound may cause a problem with excessive handling. It's bound with thread, so the more you open it, the more you wear out the binding. The bind may become an issue over time. Other than that, the cover of the book seems to be of high-quality material. The inside paper is thick, so there's no shame in using your favorite inky pen, because it will not bleed through to the other side.

Buyer, Be Careful!

This book is one of three versions I purchased-one for my Grandmother, another for my father, and a third for my mother.

I'll start from the top:

A. DESIGN:
Beautiful exterior design. The color chosen for each group (Grandmothers, Moms, Dads) is appropriate, and the cover design is clean and simple. The linen covering for the cover of each book gives it a distinguished feel, far from many of the cheaply-made alternatives that can be found in the "Customers Who Purchased This Item Also Purchased..." recommendation bar along the bottom.

There are only two issues with the design. First, the barcode that adheres to the back of the book is peeled off easily, but pulls some of the book's color off with it as it goes. Second, the books are so SMALL! This is really the main reason why they're rated at a three-star level. Between the photos and the product description, I felt as though it should have been made clear that these books are really no larger than a postcard. to discover this fact, you either have to order the books and discover it when they arrive in a tiny package, or scroll down and read into the product specs.

Also, the size is especially inconvenient for mothers, fathers and Grandmothers who are older and need more space to write (both due to handwriting and the length of their stories) that's not such a great design choice. Each question only allows for a few lines' worth of answers...can you truly expect your family members to provide a recounting of the bits and pieces of her life with only a dozen closely spaced lines?

B. INTERIOR COPY:
Questions seem interesting and story-inspiring. There isn't much in the way of uniqueness, but the fact that the books are providing a start for family members to capture each others' stories is what really makes these books special. Again, a larger book would allow for an expansion of those stories instead of shortened, clipped versions. Text is clear and clean. Easy to read.

C. PRICE:
I felt that these books were a bit overpriced, but not overpriced enough that I wanted to go through the trouble of sending them back.

D. OVERALL

About the Author
The Rev. Father Martin of Cochem, O.S.F.C., was a German Capuchin born in 1630 at Mosel. He entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin as a novitiate while still young, subsequently received Holy Orders, and was ultimately assigned as a professor of theology. He also cared for the plague victims of 1666, and thereupon began composing popular religious writings and treatises. Father Cochem authored such works as The Last Four Things and The Incredible Catholic Mass, the former of which was printed by TAN in 1987. He died on the tenth of September, 1712, at Waghausel.

The best book on the Roman Catholic Mass that I have ever read

A friend at my men's study group recommended this book to me. Written in the 17th century as a defense of the Catholic Church in response to the Protestant Reformation, Fr. Cochem explains the Mass in exacting detail. It is not an easy read, having been written over 300 years ago and translated from German. Now on my second reading of the book, I am amazed at how much I have learned about the Mass, and regret that I didn't read it when I was younger. Highly recommended.

In my opinion, this book should be ranked 2nd in importance after the Bible. This book is for all Christians that celebrate the Holy Eucharist and believe in the Real Presence, not only Roman Catholic (but also Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, and Oriental Orthodox believers). This book had a big impact on my life and how to view the mass in a proper way.

The book goes into details about the mass, priest vestments, church, how to offer the mass in the right way, when to pray during mass, the fruits and graces obtained from the mass and the infinite value the mass holds.
The mass is indeed incredible and so is this book.
A must have for all Catholic and Orthodox believers!

I absolutely love this book!!! It gives the most beautiful description of the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass I have ever seen. There are so many things I want to remember as I am at Mass.
I only wish I had a photographic memory. In the 'Forward' it says that you will want to read it again,
and you find that's true. It's also the best book for Eucharistic Adoration. I gave copies to all my friends.
I just can't say enough positive comments about it. Do not deny yourself this treasure.

Deep, meaty and clever, but digressive and slow-going

This book is typical of Daniel Dennett's other offerings. It's extremely meaty, rich in metaphor and analogies, often deep and remarkably thought-provoking, linguistically clever, wide ranging to the point of being distractingly digressive and covers a remarkable swathe of intellectual ground, from computers to neurobiology, from word acquisition to elevator design, from computer bugs to biological viruses, from Charles Darwin to Alan Turing.

That being said, it's hard to say what this book is really about since it's about so many different things. As another reviewer pointed out, Dennett's digressions can sometimes be distracting and it is difficult to see the central point in his argument. The book also doesn't seem to present a novel hypothesis per se. Its ostensible purpose is to describe the evolution of human minds and thinking and what makes them special. It succeeds in this endeavor to a large extent, but still doesn't end up really explaining key concepts like consciousness (which Dennett thinks is an illusion). The main device that Dennett uses for unraveling intelligence and minds is the concept of memes which was introduced by Richard Dawkins. According to Dennett, the co-evolution of genes and culture through memes is what makes human minds special. Again, gene-culture co-evolution is not a new concept, but Dennett explores it with verve and insight.

I think the main function of this book is to serve as a springboard for exploring some very clever analogies between software and biology and for appreciating the naturalistic evolution of human language and thinking. There are gems scattered throughout the text: for instance, the concept of "competence without comprehension" which is a version of Dawkins's "blind watchmaker" analogy, and the very revealing insight that simple things like nail cutters might be impossible to imagine arising through natural selection while complicated things like human minds can well be imagined evolving this way. There are also excellent discussions on how children acquire words and how these words then interact with genetics and culture to produce very human features of the brain like foresight, introspection and planning for the future. Some of this material constitutes an argument against intelligent design. The analogies are elegant and often clever and Dennett's play on words can be very subtle; for this reason several paragraphs may have to be read a few times to really grasp their essence. In this sense the book has to be savored and resampled like fine wine.

In general then, I enjoyed the book but found it too digressive and slow-going in parts. On several occasions I found Dennett slipping into academic language, with the academic references and jargon to boot. Reading this volume requires patience and careful study, and this patience will often be rewarded. But it's not what you would call an introductory or popular treatment: if you are not familiar with standard popular works on evolution, language and psychology by writers like Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, Matt Ridley or Daniel Kahneman it would likely be pretty hard going. But as a sampling of scattered gems which reveal themselves through rumination and constant reflection, it's hard to find a writer as clever and insightful as Daniel Dennett.

wanders aimlessly

I previously read Dennett's Elbow room: the varieties of free will worth wanting, and thought it did a reasonable job of demystifying the topic. This book, however, was a disappointment. Dennett wanders aimlessly from topic to topic. I honestly can't tell you what the book was supposed to be about. If it was supposed to be about the evolution of the human mind, then I don't understand why this is a topic that philosophy has anything useful to say about. It would have been more interesting to read a book by a scientist, maybe someone who studies animal behavior.

Somewhat of a Synthesis Between Darwin's Dangerous Idea and Consciousness Explained

Dennett's books are lengthy because he takes any route possible prod the reader for his main points, thesis per se. This book was less focused than say Consciousness Explained, or Darwin's Dangerous Idea, but more focused than Intuition Pumps (which was more a compilation of general thinking concepts, but that's the point). It took upon the more general task of explaining the evolution of consciousness, and did some justice in explaining how we can be "conscious" human beings, vastly more capable of higher thought than any other animal in the biosphere, with just the mindless neuronic machinery installed in our brain (and body). This is called, and he stresses plus explains it: competence without comprehension. Sort of like the Dawkinian 'selfish gene' point of view whereas from the bottom up genes are programmed to propagate the reproduction of their own lineage. Dennett imposes this naturalistic evolutionary approach on organisms like ants, on language, and on memes. Whereas on Consciousness Explained you'd get a much more detailed and trenchant discussion consciousness, and on Darwin's Dangerous Idea you'd get a more elaborate portrait of evolution, here you get a more generalized synthesis of both (with updates). What's good about Dennett is that despite the fact he takes you through many paths to get to his point, he makes you aware that he's doing so. If you have read Dennett's books before, then, at least from experience, his lengthy discussion on language and memes are novel to me and shine the brightest here. The information may be superfluous at times - being handed it is like when you're given extra food at a barbecue despite being full. You feel bloated after, but it was good food. Charles B. Slonim, MD is Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida and Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He received an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1993 and the Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tampa Bay Business Journal in 2010. Dr. Slonim has lectured extensively to physicians throughout the United States and in more than 56 international cities in over 35 countries around the world. He has been published in many ophthalmic journals and textbooks. Amy Z. Martino, MD is a third-year resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida.

Eye Was There

THANK YOU DR. SLONIM!!! This book is outstanding for anyone who has lost an eye or is facing enucleation. I am a long time wearer of a prosthesis and have faced many reconstruction surgeries of my lower lid. I discovered Dr Slonim after another local surgeon (who billed himself as an eyelid specialist) botched a surgery. Be VERY careful when finding a surgeon if you wear a prosthesis and need help! When I was trying to find an expert, I realized there was very little information available to people who lose an eye. This book fills an important gap and should be subtitled: Lost Eye for Dummies! This book is on target and covers the cosmetic AND emotional challenges of living without an eye. BRAVO!

Eye Was There by Dr Charkes Slonim

Dr Slonim was my Dr. I injured my right eye in a tragic accident on Jan 22 2010 and Dr Solnim was recommended to me as a VA Eye Dr. He operated on my eye Oct 4 2010 and I got my prothetic eye on 22 Jan 2011, exactly 1 year after my accident. The book is so very well written and easy to understand by a novice. Dr Solnim is one fantastic Dr and he took the time to explain the procedure he would perform and then spent time with me to continue my recovery. The ocularist, Mr Frank Tanaka, was a wonderful accompliment to Dr Solunim and my recovery. Thanks to them, I have recovered well and certainly am learning the processes of singular site. However, my golf game suffered a little bit, but I am working on getting it back to where it was before the accident (9 Handicap). Greata Book and a Great Doctor.
I had ordered the book on Kindle after Dr Slonim told me about it.

Gift for my Mom

This book was a gift to my Mom who recently lost her eye from ocular melanoma. She is doing great and this was given to help her do even better. She enjoyed the book and said that it did give her more "insight" into what she is experiencing.
