This is an upstairs/downstairs story of friendship between Maria, a sweet little girl, and rodent Mouse Mouse. Their friendship is a secret, but their lives share many similarities as McClintock’s busy, colorful illustrations demonstrate. Large two-page spreads are divided horizontally to show the warm surroundings and the stuff that makes a cozy human home—plants, lamps, pillows, pictures, books—many of which are duplicated on the bottom half in equally cozy mouse digs. Maria reads on the living room floor, Mouse Mouse reads curled up in a can. They even have matching slippers at the sides of their beds (Maria’s is a spool bed, Mouse Mouse’s is made of clothes pins). It is these details, rendered in pen and ink, watercolor and gouache, that will engage young readers as they pore over both worlds, comparing furniture, mobiles, and nighttime rituals. While the story is an adorable convergent parallel lives tale of humans and mice and a fun read, Barbara McClintock's art elevates it to a whole new level! I could spend hours looking at each spread with all the wonderfully drawn details.

Love this book and it's greatly detailed illustrations! When I was a small girl, my cousin and I used to spend our summers making mouse houses out of shoe boxes and felt. Beverly Donofrio also happens to be one of my favorite Authors!

A Too-Brief History of Flattery

What can I say about Richard Stengel's book that this smart -- no, incandescent -- writer couldn't say better himself? And, while we're at it, wait'll you see how great he looks in the dust jacket photo! Like the lipstick-smeared derriere on the front cover, Stengel's book comes in two parts: first is a history of flattery. It moves from the Bible, which suddenly makes sense through Stengel's lens ("God begins to preach compassion and justice, and in order to flatter him, God's followers make those virtues the hallmark of three great religions"), through ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance -- all hotbeds of flattery -- before crossing the Atlantic, where Stengel's analysis is particularly astute. (He writes: "Flattery in America was seen as unmanly. You can't flatter the Marlboro Man, and he won't flatter you.") A Princeton-educated journalist (now managing editor of Time.com), Stengel surveys flattery in Hollywood, in Washington, and among the media elite (Sam Donaldson's obsequious letter to his journalistic quarry is a gem). Then Stengel switches from history to how-to, dispensing the kind of advice that makes the book seem cheap (and probably a tax deductible business expense to boot): Avoid seeming like you want something [who needs a job at Time.com, anyway?]; avoid giving the same kind of compliment to more than one person [but what will I tell Jay McInerny?]; be cool or neutral at the beginning and grow warmer and more complimentary over time [be honest -- do you think I mentioned the jacket photo too early?]. If there's one thing wrong with Stengel's history of flattery, it's that it's only 315 and 3/4 pages. It should have been 316 -- at least.

Flippancy and Flattery

This book makes some good points and includes some interesting perspectives on flattery and grovelling. At the same time, it is decidedly "popular" rather than scholarly. The most irritating aspect of the book is the author's breezy flippancy; he tries much too hard to be much too clever, and the result is merely tiresome. I wish I could have checked this out of the library for a few days instead of buying it. For those with a serious interest in the subject, Alfons Silbermann's "Grovelling and Other Vices" is clearly superior.

Wry Panoramic Look of the Social Roles of Flattery

Without intending to be too kind, the question this book really raises is who should read it. Some will love it while others will hate it. What will be your reaction?
Flattery is one of those subjects that most people cannot and do not want to take seriously. If you like a little humor with your social commentaries, you will enjoy this book.
If you want a how-to book on being a more successful flatterer, you will find some helpful hints towards the end of the book. But you will feel unrewarded by the histories of flattery, beginning with studies of chimpanzee behavior.
If you want to learn how to defend yourself against flattery's corrupting influences, there are useful ideas here and there. But you will probably still feel vulnerable in this regard ( . . . at least until someone praises you for avoiding being taken in by flattery . . . assuming the praise is genuine, and not just flattery).
If you want a guide for how to praise, rather than flatter, you will find some ideas here. But that's also not the book's purpose. You belong elsewhere to serve your purpose.
If you take a very reverent attitude towards the Old Testament, you may be offended by what the author has to say about God in that context. You should skip at least that chapter or perhaps the entire book. If you are an agnostic or an atheist, you should probably start there in chapter three.
If you have read widely on flattery (animal experiments about how "alpha" males are created, Machiavelli, Castiglione, Franklin, Bacon, Dale Carnegie, Chesterfield, and troubadour verse), you will find little new in this book except for the quips. Now, the quips are quite good, so you may like the book anyway. But be aware that about eighty percent of the book is providing such historical perspectives.
On the other hand, if you want to add to your repertoire of cocktail party stories, this book is excellent. You get humorous glimpses into the foibles and virtues of those who wrote about flattery, as well as their writing. Mr. Stengel is a witty story teller, who makes it all much more interesting than it really is. For example, anyone who likes Dale Carnegie books or courses should read about Mr. Carnegie's background as an unpopular young person and ineffective salesman.
There are many legitimate ways to attract attention from people that are different from flattery (in the sense of "false praise"). For example, you can simply be very attentive because you respect all other people. You can tell funny stories because you like to amuse. You can help people accomplish things they care about, because you like to make life better for others.
Whatever you do, be sure that you choose how you want to be sociable, however, rather than simply falling into the habits of flattery without thinking about what you are doing. The unconscious desire to please may take you along paths you don't really want to trod.
Have true friends and a meaningful life!

I learned a lot!

In Brighter Brains, Hank Pellissier has brought together a lot of useful information about the brain that most people just don't know. The book is filled with many great ideas on how to improve and hurt IQ. In the age where neuroscience has discovered the plasticity of our brains, a book like this is important and fascinating reading.

The book is informative but it could have been better. It has some good information but its lacking a clear description about how to increase your IQ. It is like a research paper on IQ, I wouldn't call it a real book. Anyway for the price, you can't beat the info. Hope that helps.

I have been studying the Hermetic principles and the law of attraction for many years now and Love this little book I spent eight hundred bucks on books on amazon last year and this is my first book review. Wonderful job you have taken the Master Key, Kyablion and other great works and put them into a simple easy to read book. Hats off to you sir the only thing I don't like is the fact that you wrote the same book I was attempting to write LOL Back to the drawing board.

The real deal

Justin, you did a great job for your first book! Congratulations! I loved it. It was on point, to the "t", just as I expected it to be. I follow you on YouTube and listen to almost everyone of your podcast, videos, interviews etc. I now know and truly believe that life is what you make it. This book supports my belief way before I even knew what the law and attraction was. It's a easy read. Not long at all. I definitely would like a audio version of this book so I can listen to at my convenience so that way I can lock in all this good stuff in my subconscious. Thanks again. Happy fan!

Great thoughts, needs editing.

I liked the book. The bullet point presentation was a little weird at first but by the end of the book I liked it. Each little idea a cubbyhole unto itself but all working together. I was able to pick and choose the ones that resonated most with me and highlight them for later reading on my notes to solidify what I already learned. The reason I gave four stars instead of five was there are quite a few grammatical/spelling errors in here and it made the read difficult at times because it would stop me in my tracks. It's not too hard to figure out what was meant to be said but taking the time to do so distracts from the reading.

You don't have to be from Chicago to appreciate this book andRoyko's genius as a writer and wry political observer.
His almostmatter-of-fact accounting of the machine corruption in Chicago under Daley is eye opening. Those who analogize it to the Mafia are on point, except its power the politicians are after, rather than just money. It's unbelievable to me that all of the venality was so out in the open and tolerated by the populace.
Particularly interesting was his account of the ethnic and racial evolution in this melting pot of a city. Italian, Polish, Irish, German, and Slavic neighborhoods whose only common theme was their hatred of the blacks. The paradox being that despite the white hatred, the segregation and appalling living conditons, those same white people could count on the black vote come election time, largely because of unscrupulous black ward bosses who cared more about power than helping their constituents.
One of the many things I like about Royko is that after reading his columns for years, I couldn't tell you whether his politics are liberal or conservative. He didn't deal in bromides, just reality. When something wasn't right, he called it on the perpetrators and wasn't hesitant to name names. I really miss the guy.

Boss: a candid and honest account of Richard J. Daley and the city he built

Royko's classic portrait of Daley and "his" Chicago is perhaps most distinguished by its narrator. While the facts remain the same between this book and others such as American Pharoah, the profound attachment and understanding of a man who spent his professional career writing about the same city that shaped Daley creates a much more colorful and intricate perspective on mid 20th century Chicago. Presented as a journalistic piece rather than a heavily footnoted history or political science text, Boss engages the reader on a more narrative than statistical level. Through personal stories of machine "grunts" and smoke filled rooms, Royko accomplishes more in just over 200 pages than the statistical tome American Pharoah does in over 600. It comes down to one necessary and incontrovertable fact: only a Chicagoan can truly understand and synthesize the experience and leadership of his or her city. East-coasters can write about the "City with Big Shoulders" until their knuckles seize up, but they will not be able to truly appreciate the subtleties of Chicago's culture and psyche. As a highly respected voice in Chicago journalism who was at loggerheads with Mayor Daley on numerous occasions, Royko presents an honest and faithful version of Chicago and its mayor.

Like Watching Sausage Being Made. It Isn't Pretty

The late Mike Royko knew Chicago and how it worked. His writing style is a perfect match for the subject matter. This book doesn't waste oodles of time psychoanalyzing everyone of Daley's actions. Mr. Royko lays out in a few pages what makes the little streetfighting, political opportunist tick and then focuses on the underbelly of Chicago politics. Also, the reader will not be treated to flowery prose but a blunt, dissection of the Democrat "Machine" that ran Chicago with an iron fist. This is raw power manipulating the system to get what it wants. Politicians, easily manipulated news organizations in print (especially The Chicago Tribune) and television, racist attitudes which created and perpetuated black slums, pandering to big business thru largesse and a corrupt, brutal police force. And talk about shades of George W. Bush... due to Daley's politcal connections, his sons avoided Vietnam by jumping over a long waiting list of other candidates and being given plum reserves positions. Mr. Royko's work is not just an outstanding assessment of Chicago, but power in general. This small book packs a lot of punch. Well worth reading.
