Whimsy in science?

Lyall Watson is a renaissance man, and his vast and varied experiences, readings
and interests are easily on display in this and all his other books. Watson has an eye for whimsical and unusual events, for beautiful images whether natural
or manufactured, and a keen intution for the magic in the ordinary image, thought, and objects.

This book specifically addresses all those strange and unexplained events which our orthodox scientists (isn't that an oxymoron) reject as unproven,
untested, and unscientific. Watson who holds a PhD in some branch of the natural sciences sees the inifinite humor, compassion, and joy inherent in being
alive on this earth, and the strange inhabitants of it, whether it be Komodo dragons, human beings, or rivers. In his stories and anecdotes inanimate objects
come to life, water can be happy or sad, mammals can re-grow severed limbs, and teh existance of shells (with their forms often representing mathematical perfection)
can have hidden lives....

If for no other reason than to have whimsical, unusual, and interesting trivia to talk about at a dry and dull dinner table, this book is to be read and marvelled at...

Read it for the Cannibal article

I read and enjoyed this book years ago, and copied a chapter I have reread a number of times and shared with friends. In the chapter called The Essence of Balance, Watson describes a culture of cannibals living in Indonesian New Guinea. These Papuan Asmat people have (had, presumably) a system of headhunting that at first glance is repellent: eating your dead enemy's brains? But in delicate detail, one comes to potentially understand this system as infinitely more civilized (to start with, by resolving tribal tensions with a single death) than our supposedly superior ways of bombing, maiming, and starving hundreds or millions. This essay alone is worth the price of the book.

Flat-out Amazing.

Not only do you feel your brain cells stretch with reading this book, you actually come out of it feeling smarter. This is not something that can be said of most books! Watson does an amazing job of drawing seemingly unconnected threads together and showing us how they fit--from a marine operculum's relationship to an extinct species of Man on the Skeleton Coast, to the opening sentence of one of the most amazing and ultimately uplifting stories of cultural contact and population pressure: "Some of my best friends are cannibals." The book sits with you long after you've read it. Watson does amazing research and it shows.

The Strike Eagle, a two-seat attack version of the F-15 interceptor, was barely combat qualified when the war began, and those manning them had to cope with inexperience, spotty leadership, bureaucratic rigidity in higher command, the fatigue of two or three missions per day, and formidable Iraqi ground defenses. Both planes and crews acquitted themselves well, though; among other achievements, they became the backbone of the "Scud-busting" so crucial to keeping Israel out of the war. This thorough, readable account of state-of-the-art warfare is based on extensive interviews as well as documents and will be exceptionally worthwhile reading for those interested in aviation and the Persian Gulf War. An experienced pilot himself, William L. Smallwood served in the Air Force during the Korean War and is the author of Strike Eagle: Flying the F-15E in the Gulf War and the highly acclaimed Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War, both part of Potomac's series The Warriors. He lives in Buhl, Idaho.

Great memoir about one of the greatest jet fighters in the history!

There isn't much more to say other than:

The book is written in a very simple yet informative language even for an average person. However if you are a military aviation enthusiast, and want to read about what those guys went through and did back then as well as the environment they were in, then you will be pleasantly surprised by this book. I personally enjoyed it very much.

Remedial English

As a fan of military flight sims, I looked forward to reading this book in order to enrich my understanding of modern aerial combat with the F-15E. Unfortunately, the author's ponderous, wooden narrative and puerile dialog dampened my initial enthusiasim. Though the book is filled with interesting anecdotes and insights that only a person who was actually there would know, they are squandered since the author's command of English is at the level of a grade schooler. I had to stop after only 2 chapters since I couldn't bear it, it was like being forced to watch Sesame Street. I didn't expect the Great American Novel, but the writing here was absymally poor.

Brutally realistic account of life in the Strike Eagle!

As a former F-15E WSO in the 336TFS depicted in this book, I can say with absolute confidence that this is a totally accurate account of the Strike Eagle in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Mr. Smallwood took great pains to interview as many of us that flew the aircraft as was humanly possible and he has MORE facts than the Air Force in terms of the leadership problems and difficulties in fielding a new aircraft with new crewmember in a combat situation. This book brought back laughs, sobs and the very smell of being in the jet! He described instances that I was involved in as if he were standing there when it happened. If you ever looked at the F-15E and wondered what it would be like; read this book! It is very accurate and reflects the emotions of going off to "war" and being in combat. All of us that flew the aircraft salute Bill Smallwood for his insight and commitment to accuracy.
