About the Author
Polly Nichols and Martha Shaw, mother and daughter, shared a deep concern for young people and more than 30 years experience as special educators when they chose to combine their talents as writer and illustrator. Dr. Nichols, a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers Workshop for fiction as well as of its College of Education, used these skills to create the imaginative, therapeutic story-telling format of Whispering Shadows. Martha Shaw created the drawings that illustrate the concepts and make them appealing and accessible to young people. She has also served as an award-winning special education teacher in classrooms for students with autism, behavior problems,learning and developmental delays. Her experiences with more able autistic students and as a consultant to adolescent group homes contributed to the succesful translation of Rational Emotive Therapy and Cognitive Therapy concepts into new words and images that are meaningul to young thinkers.

It pokes good natured fun of the foibles of people back then

More Fables, which may have been the inspiration for Thurber's "Fables for Our Times", was written at the turn of the last century. It pokes good natured fun of the foibles of people back then, and paints a colorful picture of everyday life in a time usually skipped over by the standard history texts used in high school and college. I enjoyed the book as much for historical reasons as for the humor. The fables use the slang spoken then, at least as perceived by the author, and have caused a few reviewers to complain that they are too hard to read. This is at least in part an indictment of liberal arts in academia today, where nothing written before 1960, except Shakespeare, sees the light of day unless it passes the ideological filters of the leftist bigots who predominate there.

One of the most insightful relationship books, I've read. It's truly saved my sanity.

I'm half way through this book and I believe that this book is exceptional. It's like you are at a therapy session, it's very informative and insightful. It has helped me through the emotions and pitfalls that many of fall into over and over. It takes you step by step on how to understand your feeling and deal with them rather than pushing them aside and bottling them inside.

Many of the feeling that I experienced are addressed directly in the book, so you don't feel like your going crazy and losing your mind. When at times you can feel that way. It has truly helped me get stronger and stronger every day. I have been going to a therapist for the last year before reading this book, but this book helps build off everything that I've been learning about myself and my relationship. It really recaps and encompasses the whole relationship in a nutshell. It's not a warm and fuzzy book and its not impractical either, it's real text that you can apply and relate to.

Love this book. If you are going through a separation or divorce, PLEASE read this book. It will help you, I promise. This book was written many years ago and remains a classic. It provides a sort of step-by-step guide to hep you go through the loss of a spouse or a significant other (not through death but through a break-up). It is well written and easy to understand. In my opinion, it is not psycho-babble. The book is down to earth and honestly truthful. Best wishes!

If you are happen to be in the misfortune of divorce then this is the best book! I'm so happy I found it. Divorce is one of the toughest things I've ever experienced so it is really nice to find guidance and to know that many of the things and thoughts that cross through your mind are not that crazy after all!!! This book has even prepared me to know what to expect during this process. Sometimes I even had to laugh when I was not yet starting a certain chapter but already going through that phase, let's say the anger phase and then I would see exactly that chapter to follow in my book so it is like a relief to know that it is not you are really getting crazy but just walking through the mud and hopefully finding the shore soon.

Im still not done with my divorce but definitely this is book has help me so much to give me that extra strength (together with therapy) and not only to go through the s***ty part of divorce but prepare me as well to think about what went wrong, what can you do to improve yourself, move on, evolve and learn from the mistake. So five stars to this book!!

About the Author
Karen Firestone is president, CEO, and co-founder of Aureus Asset Management, an investment firm dedicated to providing contemporary asset management to families and individuals. She is a contributor to the Harvard Business Review and the Huffington Post. Karen also appears on CNBC’s popular Squawk Box.

Previously, she spent 22 years at Fidelity Investments, most recently as a diversified fund manager in the Growth Group with oversight of the Large Cap Fund, Advisor Large Cap Fund, Destiny 1 Fund, and several institutional nonprofit and pension funds.

Karen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1977 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1983. She is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Commonwealth School and has served on various committees and Task Forces for Harvard University. Karen is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston.

She lives in Brookline, Massachusetts with her husband, David. They have four grown children, two grandchildren, and two Springer Spaniels. Karen is an avid runner and tennis, golf, and bridge player.

I was eager to read Even the Odds because it was written by one of the most respected money managers in Boston and it did not disappoint. I was thrilled to see Karen Firestone sharing her perception of risk by using candid real life anecdotes. This book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand risk (not memorize equations and formulas) and get inside the mind of a brilliant, sincere and determined investment professional.

A gem

I read this book because I was curious as Karen Firestone is a powerhouse in portfolio management in the investment world of Boston. Back in the days she was a prot�g�e of Peter Lynch, the superstar who managed Fidelity Magellan Fund. This is a very readable and enjoyable book. I loved all the case studies (sort of HBS style, only more friendly and realistic). The stories throughout the book were interesting to read and it is not anything like one of those business books that aim to bore you to death. She is witty and self-deprecating. She puts in little sentences here and there to show how relaxed and comfortable she is with herself. I gained even more respect for her as a person as well as a portfolio manager after reading the book. She has a guiding principle that directs her career and decision-making process. A great book that shows what a remarkable human being she is. When someone raised four kids and managed to be such a successful investment professional with a kind heart, she would definitely gain your respect as well.

Great insights. Wonderful Reading. Well worth the risk.

Throughly enjoyable book to read. It is full of details and insights on risk taking on the ground level of wealth management. Most of all, it is brutally honest and open about the things that do not go right. I found it impossible not to relive and rerun my own encounters with similar situations. It gave me a new perspective and point of view for how to frame the tough decisions that matter most. So it also helped to deepen my bank of experience to draw on for taking risk. The book is highly personal and down to earth. Both practioneers and clients of wealth management will find it worth reading. A great book for the plane or your next road trip.

Mine, my mother's and my son's very favorite book! The music is professionally done! I have an extremely difficult time listening to real kids sing (unless in church or related to them!) But this is sung by adults(?) Very fun and entertaining!

About the Author
Dr. Robert Kegan is the Meehan Professor of Adult Learning and Professional Development at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. With innovative concepts, lively examples, and invaluable tools, these two Harvard psychologists unveil before your very eyes a radically new way of being at work.

Their basic premise is startling. In the ordinary business organization, most people have two jobs: the public one they’re actually paid to do as well as a very private one they do in secret—hiding their individual limitations and weaknesses, trying to look good. What if, these authors ask, your organization were to find a way to welcome the personal into the usually public realm of work and thereby recapture the tremendous energy nearly everyone wastes on hiding?

With probing and penetrating research, they played devil’s advocate to three very different but spectacularly successful business organizations that have actually found how to operate this way. My only question is whether organizations in the public and not-for-profit sectors make just as promising candidates for DDOs as for-profit organizations do. Probably One of the Five Most Important Business Books You'll Ever Read. Here's Why.

This is one of the most important business / personal development books you might read.

If you are interested in organizational change and have been around the block once or twice, you may have found yourself a bit disenfranchised or frustrated by flavor of the month attempts at "change." Or, you may be mystified why most leadership development doesn't seem to stick. Or you may have read about concepts like "learning organizations," "integral theory," "employee engagement" and the like but have no idea how to implement such things. If any of this sounds familiar to you, then this is the book you've long awaited.

Here, you will hear a breathtakingly refreshing refrain--if you want your organization to be a learning organization, or get employees engaged, or "grow" employees, you don't need a program, a workshop, a training, a change initiative or any of the other things you've likely heard of, or tried, and don't stick. According to the authors, you need three things:

1. Home -- You must create an environment where people feel safe enough to grow and change.
2. Edge -- Each person in your organization needs to identify what, exactly, their growing edge actually is (everyone, no exceptions).
3. Groove -- You must embed practices in "way we do things around here" that actively support and challenge people to grow--on a daily basis.

And for you, personally, the chapter on how to identify your own growing edge (Chapter 6 -- Uncovering Your Biggest Blind Spot) takes you through a powerful, four step process that will help you see in stark relief why you probably haven't been able to change the one thing that most holds you back. Do that exercise (as I did), and then imagine everyone in your organization knowing the same thing, and supporting one another in making their one big change. In that one step alone, you are going to realize what most organizations can't change, try as they might, no matter the good intentions they have.

And then there is Chapter 2 on adult development, the science behind it. It is fantastic. Clear. Accessible. There, the authors cover three stages of adult development--based on science and research--and the differences between the stages. And, guess what. Less than 2% of the population has reached the highest stage. You should know what that stage is, and you might want to consider--as I have--what achieving that stage of development might mean to you, your leadership, your life, your company. And, yes, the authors do tell you how to move yourself and others along those stages.

The personal development aspects of this book, alone, are worth the price of admission. Maybe you aren't that interested in organizational change, or don't feel you are in a position to effect organizational change, but are greatly interested in personal development and believe that by changing yourself, you can affect the people, company and world around you. If that sounds like you, Chapter 2 (adult development) and Chapter 6 (uncovering your blind spot) are immediately accessible, practical and potentially life-altering. Any person interested in their own personal development, and/or who supports others in their development needs to read, understand and apply those two chapters.

No, the book and the approach isn't prescriptive and doesn't contain a checklist. Your organization has its own culture, own needs and is at its own developmental stage. The authors understand that. One size does not fit all. So they give you a solid framework. They tell you how others have done it. And then you make it your own, working from where you are. That is the only way it truly can work, anyway, based on my experience.

In short, read this book.

Perhaps, like me, after reading scores of business books, leadership books, coaching books, organizational change books, personal development books over the years... you may conclude this is one of the five most important books you've ever read. And, perhaps, even THE most important one.

Transform your organization!

You’ve heard of the learning organization, and might even work in an organization that leans in that direction. In An Everyone Culture, Kegan and Lahey push the limits of the learning organization and offer the “deliberately developmental organization” as the new standard to tackle the increasing complexity we face today, as employees and individuals.

They help us to see that in addition to our day jobs, every employee is doing a second job (covering their weaknesses and trying to look good); one that is seriously impacting our ability to get things done! Building on more than 30 years of research and by profiling three successful organizations, they offer concrete practices, backed by the science, that create transformational change and business success.

If you are sick of accepting the current organizational norms – covering up weaknesses, positional posturing, and the like – then this is the book for you. Using the guidance and recommendations here, you can transform your organization. That said, this book isn’t for the faint of heart; doing the work of transformation takes time and effort and you’re not going to find the 7-step program or silver bullet in this book. But, why would you want to you? You know that even if they work for a little bit, they don’t work for long.

If you thought previous work by Kegan and Lahey was useful and applicable, you’ll be thrilled to find even greater application and accessibility in an Everyone Culture.

A 3 volume collection of papers by an influential engineer

This is not a single book it is a set of 3 hardbacks:
Vol 1 is 504 pages and consists of Heaviside's papers published in the Electrician of 1891 to 1893. Vol II is 547 pages and consists Heaviside's papers published in the Electrician of 1894 to 1898. Vol III is 666 pages and consists of Heaviside's papers in the published Electrician of 1900 to 1912. It also contains papers published in Nature during this same interval. Additionally there are 140 pages of unpublished notes discovered after Heaviside's death.
Heaviside evidently published a lot of material and was a very influential engineer both in his time and subsequently. His views on Electromagnetic Theory, and in particular on transmission line theory, shaped the whole development of the subject. His arguments with the influential "experts" of his day are made public in these republished papers. Not all of his criticisms were polite and this certainly comes across in these papers!
Heaviside was a man of very limited financial resources and yet still managed to achieve scientific greatness and esteem from the great men of his time. The other men of great influence, but little ability, with whom he crossed swords, all seem to have fallen by the wayside, leaving Heaviside's viewpoint as dominant. Somehow Heaviside never translated his intellectual and scientific ability and contributions into enough finances to support him. He was desperately poor throughout his life, even having the gas supply to his home cut off during winter months due to non-payment of bills. It is therefore fitting that these volumes be read and appreciated by future generations as his reward. You may of course have heard of the Heaviside operator in calculus, the Heaviside step function, the Kennelly-Heaviside layer in the ionosphere, the Heaviside-Feynman formula for the radiated field of a moving charged particle. There is a lot of other stuff which did not get Heaviside's name on it, such as the telegrapher's equation.
Throughout, Heaviside tries to explain things in easy to understand terms using simple notation. He hated the wretched gothic fonts used by Maxwell in the famous treatise (and on this point anyone who has ever read Maxwell will easily agree!) and he introduced the bold faced fonts for the D, E, B and H vector fields that are still used today.
This collection of papers is an honest and non-pompous piece of work. It is actually pleasurable to read and to compare against more modern writers on the same subject. The reader will perhaps forgive Heaviside for his lack of (false) modesty. After all, this fame is evidently the greater part of what he personally received from his publications by way of a reward.
